The BIGGEST pitfall I have seen in new technology implementations and migrations is the "Lift and Shift." Many times, implementations are so complex that end-users get overwhelmed and simply import the old business processes into new software...negating the entire reason for the modernization in the first place. New technology is a GREAT time to re-evaluate your processes with the new capabilities in mind.

“Like for like then we will drive change”. This mentality blocks innovation and perpetuates legacy mindsets and processes. You’re not buying a faster processor. You’re investing in a change program. Get the processes reworked then acquire and configure the solution to accomplish a new and better state.

It's more of enthusiasm associated with new technology or tools, that drives all, rather deep dive to identify benefits/challenges and futurustics aspect of that technology. The question could be "are we just following market hype " created for latest tool/technology. Food for thought 🤔

With new technologies there can be a lot of uncertainties when writing a business case for a project. Piloting can be a good solution to implementing new techs. But it can be a pitfall by itself when it is planned poorly; or when a decision is made to scale up the technology shortly after the pilot is completed, because the learning goals might not be clearly understood at this point.

I see this all the time. Some of the reasons are - Insufficient planning by rushing into tech implementation without having a sound understanding of organisation needs and business goals - Insufficient stakeholder engagement - Change Management needs to be effective to create a positive impact and communicating and managing expectations. - Lack of adequate security controls - Communicating the vision – Whilst some organisations are successful in creating a vision, this isn’t communicated well to the execution team – thereby, resulting in an overemphasis on feature development that does not necessarily roll up to the vision, and creating a layer of complexity and increase in costs. - Not establishing a mechanism to measure the success

A lack of vision in adopting new technologies can hinder progress. Failing to envision the end goal and benefits often leads to aimless implementations. Clear objectives, foreseeing challenges, and aligning technology with business goals are vital. IT plays an important advisory role to the business, so the strategy must accompany that role. This means it's key to have relationships and open channels with different teams and business units within the business.

Whenever we ask someone to change, it means they need to invest effort and time to adapt. This investment of their time needs to be justified to them in a way that they can see the benefit (and ideally benefit directly). Developing a clear communications strategy is essential. This should include a clear message of how the new technology is genuinely adding value to adopters that they can understand within the context of "their world". Address the WHY's: why is it valuable to our organization, why is it valuable to you as an individual, why implement/change now, and why this change versus any other? Really good good at the "pitch" and make sure its consistently and constantly communicated.

One missing pitfall in this article is "Trying to replicate old processes on top of a new technology". Sometimes, when you bring a new technology, the associated process has to change as well. This happened in past experience where a project was trying to recreate old mainframe centric processes on top of modern CI/CD technologies and failed twice. We restarted and turned around the project by restructuring the process to naturally meet modern software development standards instead of fitting new tool to the old process. That required stakeholder engagement, clearly articulating and demonstrating benefits, support and education.
