Addressing internalized domestic violence, which includes physical, mental, emotional, and verbal abuse, is an important first step in developing effective solutions. Particularly in rural India, these forms of violence are often considered normal, and it is important to challenge the perception that such acts should not be considered as normal or common. Engage in-depth dialogue with community to facilitate collaborative reasoning is the first skill needed to delve more into the structured power, we as a society created. Even, to reflect violence as violence is a deep rooted challenge to reflect upon. Domestic violence is just an output of prolonged power politics between genders.

Assessing the situation is a vital aspect, as it involves evaluating the level of risk, identifying the power dynamics at play, and understanding the needs and concerns of all parties involved. A social worker must use critical thinking and active listening skills to gather information, analyze the data, and develop an appropriate intervention plan that prioritizes safety and well-being for all individuals affected by the abuse.

One thing I have found helpful is to eliminate my own biases when I am problem solving. When we have our own preconceived ideas, we can miss out on risk factors and evaluating the situation with clarity. Checking my biases allows me to be compassionate, graceful and respectful to all parties.

Tackling domestic violence requires a unique set of problem-solving skills. As a social worker, I've learned the power of active listening and empathy. 🎧❤️ Recently, I worked with a family affected by domestic violence. Through patient listening and building trust, we developed a safety plan tailored to their specific needs. This approach not only provided immediate support but also empowered them towards long-term solutions.

The social worker should not be dominant in solving domestic violence. Rather, he/she should address elders or clan leaders to interfere in solving the problems. If it found and believed that some interfaces needed from the officials (local administrators), then, the social worker may address this issue for them and closely work for action.

Assessing risk and creating a safety plan is first and foremost. Many times, the most dangerous time for a woman is when she is leaving, and after she’s left. Domestic violence injunctions/ restraining orders can be helpful, but they don’t necessarily remove the risk of physical harm and future abuse for a victim of domestic violence. Ensuring that she has a plan in place if she’s planning to leave, and also a post separation safety plan- as tactics to invoke fear, intimidate and excerpt control are usually present even if they aren’t physical any longer. Education and preparedness for these things will foster autonomy and greater healing and recovery from the effects of domestic violence.

Developing a plan is a crucial problem-solving skill for social workers addressing domestic violence. It involves collaborating with survivors to create a tailored strategy that addresses their specific needs and goals. This may include providing resources such as shelter, counseling, and legal aid, as well as helping survivors develop a safety plan to protect themselves and their children from further harm. The plan should also consider the power dynamics at play and aim to empower survivors to regain control over their lives. Effective planning requires social workers to be knowledgeable about available community resources, culturally sensitive, and attuned to the unique challenges faced by diverse populations.

1. Ensure immediate safety: Contact emergency services, leave if possible, and go to a safe location. 2. Seek support: Reach out to domestic violence hotlines, shelters, or organizations for resources and guidance. 3. Document incidents: Keep a record of abusive incidents, including dates, times, and descriptions. 4. Develop a support network: Inform trusted friends, family, or neighbors and ask for their support. 5. Financial independence: Work towards financial stability and explore job opportunities. 6. Legal protection: Consult with a lawyer to understand your rights and explore legal options. 7. Emotional well-being: Seek counseling or therapy. 8. Self-care: Prioritize self-care activities to promote well-being and healing.

Developing a plan jointly with parties is key that keeps those at risk of harm safe. But at the same time, often parties are not in the right place to be able to understand or contribute a plan and they may need you to direct more firmly.

In developing the plan, you need to study the case history and involve the victim as much as possible to find out his/her opinion on the matter.

The plan has to be co-produced with the victim and practitioners should have experience of the resources used to support them. For example, more often than not, practitioners refer to DV groups and IDVA’s without ever having experience of what it feels like to sit in as a ‘victim’. I would therefore recommend that all practitioners engage in training based activities where they too are having to speak about sensitive topics and be educated on the themes that we expect victims to learn from.

Developing a reasonable plan that is safe, time efficient, resource supported and adjustable is key for achieving the ongoing idea of success that is needed to address the multifaceted trauma of domestic violence.

Der Aufbau eines Unterstüzungssystems ist entscheidend. Je vielfältiger dieses System, desto besser, d.h. Freunde und Bekannte im Nahumfeld einweihen helfen, professionelle Beratung und Hilfen vermitteln und ggf. zuerst einmal hinbegleiten, Hausarzt zur Dokumentation von Verletzungen, wenn Kinder in der Schule sind, Schulsozialarbeiter hinzuzuiehen. Je mehr offizielle Stellen den Missbrauch dokumentiert haben, desto besser für weitere in vielen Fällen gerichtliche Auseinandersetzungen in Folge. Der/die Betroffene braucht wieder das Gefühl, dass er/sie nicht länger allein damit ist. Denn in der Regel begeben sich Betroffene aus einer Mischung aus Scham, Schuld und Angst in eine Vereinsamung mit ihrer Problematik.

Un "profilage social et personnifié" (anamnèse) est une prémisse à toute action car une personne n'est pas l'autre. Dans les options proposées, que l'usager choisira une en âme et conscience, il est utile d'en donner pour chacune la perspective finale. Le choix pourra se faire en bonne connaissance.

Again, whilst there are statutory frameworks for reviewing plans, this should always be co-produced with the victim. We need to have an understanding of what works for them, to ensure that they don’t feel coerced into compliance, therefore repeating a similar cycle of abuse that they may have experienced from the perpetrator.

Implementing the plan is a critical problem-solving skill for social workers addressing domestic violence. It involves putting the developed plan into action, mobilizing resources, and coordinating with other agencies to ensure its success. Social workers must be able to navigate complex systems and advocate for survivors' rights, while also respecting their autonomy and decision-making capacity.

Before implementing the plans, you need to involve a team of experts/multi-disciplinary team to gather and discuss the possible plans and follow up conditions or plans

La pluridisciplinarité de la gestion des violences conjugales sera une contribution essentielle dans la gestion de la situation. Assurer une bonne coordination et de feed-back de cette équipe de professionnels spécialisés est notre rôle aussi. No contexto de vítimas de violência doméstica, a violência institucional é um dos principais desafios dos assistentes sociais brasileiros, quando essas instituições responsáveis pela proteção e aplicação da lei não respondem adequadamente às situações de violência, perpetuam práticas que desfavorecem as vítimas ou quando a rede de apoio falha revitimizando-as. O assistente social desempenha um papel crucial na defesa de direitos e no apoio a vítimas de violência doméstica diante da violência institucional. Muitas vezes cabendo-lhe o papel educacional e implantação de nova cultura na instituição , trabalhando para mitigar a violência institucional e promover um ambiente mais seguro e justo para as vítimas de violência doméstica.

Las colaboraciones deben ir en una misma línea de intervención y siempre deben hacerse de forma unilateral para poder trabajar de manera efectiva. El trabajo social en cuanto a la gestión de casos se refiere debe ayudarse de todos los agentes necesarios para poder diseñar un plan de actuación conjunto. Es muy importante ir revisando la línea de trabajo y hacer coordinaciones efectivas que ayuden a las personas involucradas a conseguir las herramientas necesarias para poder ir superando los problemas.

Action looks a little different for each individual, one person may leave the home if the abuser while another person may obtain employment. There is often intersectionality with other systems and providers. Social worker often acts as a liaison between the individual and law enforcement officer. Many individuals find the involvement with law enforcement challenging at this times and social worker could help normalized the experience.

Evaluating the results is a crucial problem-solving skill for social workers addressing domestic violence. It involves assessing the effectiveness of the implemented plan and making necessary adjustments to ensure optimal outcomes for survivors. Social workers must collect and analyze data, identify areas for improvement, and modify strategies accordingly. They must also consider the long-term impact of their interventions and strive to create sustainable change.

The results can be evaluated using questionnaires, checklists, interviews or antecdotal records. You should do your findings before evaluation to know if the plans has already started or the plans has actually taken off. When the plans has started and at the end of the duration, you conduct an assessment of the overall plans which is called summative evaluation and the former is formative evaluation

Regularly reflecting on progress with and without the victim is crucial. Too often, due to a practitioner’s workload, feedback on progress is limited to the particular events and instead, requires the practitioner to review the results holistically. Has there been progress in one area as opposed to all? This should be celebrated! Has a second opinion been considered? This should be welcomed!

Processus d'évaluations est essentiel pour gérer en profondeur la situation conflictuel. Mais s'assurer de le faire par palier, au rythme de l'usager en tenant compte des ON et des OFF. Accepter de reprendre à un processus antérieur, si ce cap n'a pas été bien assimilé. Ressenti de la "réussite" de sa situation en reviendra à l'usager, même si elle est imparfaite. Rappelons ce point tant pour le/la professionel.le que l'usager: "A chaque choix, il y a une responsabilité. On doit en assumer les conséquences. Et aussi, les dommages collatéraux".

Evaluating the effectiveness of interventions should be focused on the outcomes for survivor's (children or adult). Considering what is different in terms of safety and wellbeing, stability, family functioning, healing from trauma. As well as, what has changed in the behaviour of those who perpetrate in terms of holding themselves to account, parenting or partner choices, impact on the family functioning. All evaluated through considering changes through a behaviour pattern approach. Lastly, reflecting not only with colleagues, but seeking input and feedback from survivors will be valuable.

Para hacer un buen análisis hay que partir desde la objetividad y analizar de forma crítica las actuaciones que se hayan podido realizar. Este proceso debe hacerse con las partes involucradas para poder trabajar de forma conjunta y ayudar a los usuarios a ganar autonomía y capacidad de superación. Es importante que si una línea de trabajo no es clara, busquemos otra vía o camino apoyándonos en otros profesionales que nos ayuden a tener una visión más amplia del proceso.

In addition to evaluating the results, implementing the plan, and assessing the situation, social workers addressing domestic violence need to possess other problem-solving skills. They must be able to identify and prioritize risks, engage in safety planning, and provide emotional support and advocacy to survivors. They must also have knowledge of relevant laws and policies, cultural competence, and the ability to work effectively with diverse communities.

The real problem in domestic violence is that there may be several different "clients", babies, young children, teenagers, adult family members as well as the parenting couple around most families revolve. In some cases there is only one adult and abuse may also involve addictions . Often the way domestic violence is treated may depend on nor only the way it comes to the attention of the authorities but the rules and policies of the agency initially dealing with the problem. The complexity and timeline of many cases sometimes can only be better resolved in a mixed multi-professonal team, not just by case conferences called for by say a social work manager

Always be empathetic and don't push the client to its limits. Give a space to their decisions, to understand that if she decide not to go far away she is not a loser. Respect their decision and be patient to offer help when she is ready to make the step towards it.

This is controversial. Drawing on my work in the area of domestic violence and child protection for over 20 years, my advice to any social worker is to un-learn. Child protection social work practice, in general, has a failure to protect ethos that blames mothers for the behaviours of those who engage in coercive, controlling and abusive behaviours. This is led by a bias in the systems that holds mothers to account and does not intervene effectively with the source of harm. Typically the male father/carer. In turn, this systemic bias is led by societal gender expectations and bias. Where mother's are held to a higher standard of parenting than father's. Which means asking the question: What is the role of culture in domestic violence?

Social workers need to know what information and skills they need to seek out, to best support the client. Adapting their language to cater to multi-disciplinary teams.

A lot of empathy and compassion demonstrated while engaging the victimised individuals. Also empowering them with close support will benefit them to grow their resiliency to step up stronger.

Para los Trabajadores Sociales que intervienen en entornos hostiles o marcados por violencia doméstica, mayormente basada en género, es importante conocer que no basta con querer ayudar. Se requiere de habilidades tales como la persuasión, que busquen vías alternas que le permitan al sujeto violentado, dejar de normalizar los hechos y permitirse la ayuda.

Just because you don't work directly within the domestic violence mental health field, does not mean that domestic violence won't come up in your work. When assessing common risk factors in your client population, it is important not to assume that domestic violence isn't present. The role of domestic abuse in our clients' lives can establish a rocky foundation for feelings of trust and safety that will ultimately influence the therapeutic relationship. Therefore, it is crucial to have conversations about interpersonal violence out loud (that is, with clients leading discussions at their own pace) to understand how past or present abusive experiences play a role in your client's presenting problem.
