SSO can benefit in many ways, it helps organization provide proper access management, also it reduce the effort from user perspective like not to use password again, instead push notification for two factor authentication which is easy and secure way, Apart from that organization can also manage users, their access by adding them to proper groups, roles & also limit their access on need to know basis plus enhance or update the roles whenever user require elevated or privilege roles and also remove them, when it is not required or necessary after reviewing cycle Thus SSO is beneficial

SSO can ease the efficiency of onboarding and off-boarding. Unlike standard login page which created by app developer, SSO provides more secured authentication which built by security expert, and usually supports biometric and Multifactor Authentication, some supports FIDO for phishing proof and convenience of passwordless. Just imagine if your company has 10 applications which built by various software houses, hacker will attack the weakest one. With SSO, those 10 applications will have the same battle tested security.

If SSO is enhanced with other aspects of security like something you have (smart cards, TPM based virtual smart cards or mobile virtual smart cards) along with cryptography based authentication (certificate based authentication) will increase the overall security posture. An example I’ve seen is during red team exercises. A previous implementation of Microsoft Authenticator did not require the input of a number in the Authenticator app and instead gave the user an option to allow or disallow login. We were able to bypass restrictions using an MFA fatigue attack by repeatedly sending auth requests until the user unknowingly allowed us access. Once in, we were able to login to Microsoft edge. We then moved on to sync data and found a treasure trove of usernames and passwords saved on the victim’s browser (now being synced to ours). As an organization it is important to understand that users are the weakest link to your cybersecurity goals and SSO is only a step towards it.

Using MFA to prove who is logged into the system is a good choice to strengthen the logon process. But you need to find the right MFA solution that implements a Digital Identity

FInd a balanced approach , and focus on the outcomes you want to create/serve for the customer over tech nittigrities alone. A key decision is whether to standardise on SAML or OIDC. From purely a Cyber Security position, the choice is largely irrelevant but my personal view is that, although SAML is a mature protocol it's additional complexity makes it more likely that the setup will be wrong and can create vulnerabilities. OIDC is just as secure but has less overhead and is easier to implement making it less likely you'll introduce issues. So the decision should come down to how familiar your IT team are with the protocols and whether your vendors support them.

One thing I noticed is most vendor's implementations don't add the 2FA feature capabilities for subsequent login to other applications/Service Providers after they authenticate with their IdP's. While the secure token access to Apps after IdP authentication is good for usability and adoption, multiple use- cases definitely require an element of Multifactor authentication, one is, if an attacker has access to a high ranked endpoint, the bad actor cannot access all critical applications protected with the 2FA feature as that would require a push notification and likely start an IR process given adequate security user education and/or monitoring tools.
