What are the most common issues in flipped classrooms and how can you address them?

In my experience, most students have access to the materials and you can often share things virtually anyway. The bigger issue is ensuring all students are held accountable for the prep work - after all, if they haven’t done it, it ruins your lesson! Using knowledge organisers as a way of getting them to understand the key concepts first is often a sure fire way of ensuring the quality of resources provided (you will have made them!) and it is everything in bite size chunks that means students feel less overwhelmed

Flipped classrooms show potential but face challenges. Unequal tech access hinders participation; provide alternatives, tech training. Students missing lectures struggle with self-learning; start gradual implementation, clear instructions, support. Creating pre-class materials is time-consuming; use existing resources, collaborate, focus on effective in-class activities. Some may not prepare; implement quizzes, make activities engaging, offer incentives. Ineffective in-class activities hinder benefits; focus on active learning, vary activities, refine based on feedback. Invest in professional development, build community, adapt flipped approach based on student needs.

Facing student resistance in a flipped classroom is not uncommon, but addressing these concerns effectively can contribute to a more positive learning experience. In my experience explaining the purpose of the flipped classroom and how it can benefit students allows students to understand such a huge shift from a traditional teaching model. Involving students in the decision-making process. Asking for feedback on the flipped model, and being open to making adjustments based on the input, fosters a sense of ownership and collaboration between students. Also, Students need to understand the expectations of how a flipped classroom operates, this allows students to feel confident in their ability to be successful within this model.

In an emerging economy, it is highly crucial that not every student can afford internet facilities and digital technologies and infrastructure, that creates a hindrance between learning and teaching process. An institution need to understand the requirements and access first before setting the objectives

In my opinion two massive issues: 1: misconceptions 🤔 - can sometimes be engrained into students, usually by parents, tutors or siblings which need to be addressed. 2: accountability ☝🏽 - if students don’t do the pre-assigned work then how do we hold them accountable? Some may just use the excuse that they didn’t understand 🤷🏽♂️ While there are solutions to both issues, for me these are the two biggest issues.

I enjoy using the flipped classrooms especially when the topics seems complex and I want my learners to be expose to the materials to be used before the class. I observed that it helps the students to easily internalise the learning content. Also, they are able to own their own learning. Oftentimes, these learners are able to respond or ask more deeper and thought-provoking questions (High order thinking). But the challenge is that some learners 'I do not understand the material'. What I do is to make the pre-class materials more diversed, that is, reading material, video explanation and Quiz to check understanding. Though its rigorous but it helps the teachers to have more teaching time.

It would help to address them by setting clear expectations, providing support resources, and ensuring equitable access to technology. Incorporate interactive elements to keep students engaged. Encourage a collaborative environment with peer-to-peer assistance, and regularly assess and adjust content based on student feedback. Setting your KPIs and running the classroom like a pilot project would help immensely!

Flipped Classrooms must center around interactivity at home as well as in-person. Just having students watch a 20 minute video, or read 45 pages in a book before class--that is not what good flipping is. Regardless of whether they are with you or not, they should be engaging and interacting with content and ideas. Passive learning and pure lecture is not ok, even if done at home before class. Provide interactions to accomplish while flipped at home. Have them DO things along with their learning, just so it's not informational only; that can be tasks, reflections, or even writing down questions. This is also evidence of preparation. Then when they are with you in person, you are diving deep into the doing and exploring.

Flipped classroom is structured around the idea that lecture or direct instruction is not the best use of class time. Instead students encounter information before class, freeing class time for activities that involve higher order thinking.
