Even if you live in Japan and have a decent level of Japanese, sake remains difficult to apprehend. Just visit a sake shop: most bottles are labelled with complex kanji, often calligraphed. It is complex even for a Japanese person. The best approach is similar to wine: visit the brewery, understand the importance of the local water and rice, and also the style of the producer. Most breweries are now open to visitors, with some documentation available in different languages.
