What do you do if you're struggling to find qualified candidates for a job?

If there is a difference in the quality of candidates that we get as per the requirements in the job description then we should revisit and refine the job description to ensure it accurately reflects the responsibilities of the position and is kept open in a way that it doesn't compromise on the basic skills and keeps a room for trainable skills. It helps in setting realistic expectations from the role considering in parallel the availability of resources.

Begin by identifying why. Are you only posting the jobs vs. proactive outreach? Are your requirements and compensation not aligned? Can you make the job 100% remote which will open up the candidate pool? Have you asked your current employees for referrals and offered a referral fee?

If it's not working, within two days, go back to the hiring manager with some solutions to the problem and see if they're willing to be flexible...see if the skills they need can be transferable.

Tapping into the passive candidate market is key. Passive candidates have their heads down and are busy working, not actively applying to jobs. To even get on a passive candidates radar you have to cold call them, or get referred to them so you can network and pique their interest in your role. This takes time, patience, and follow up...most of which hiring mangers or owners don't have the time to do. Which is what my recruiting firm does almost exclusively. Passive candidates lead to longer term hires, less turnover, and are highly qualified A+ players. I've been recruiting passive candidates for 11 years, I place zero job ads, and I love to cold call.

Think outside of the box! There are many other channels to find individuals. I have used GitHub to find individuals. Also, X-ray searching is handy.

It's a numbers game. You have to reach out to more people than you think. I don't mass message candidates. I will source, put them into a project, and then I will go back to review. I will look at their profile head to toe. If I see something on their profile that stands out, I will mention that in my message to them. After I send them a message, I will send them a LinkedIn request.

When I'm recruiting for a role, I will talk to people above and below the level of the role I'm working on. You never know who will know whom, or if in the future they might be a fit for a role I have open. People like to refer down typically. So if you reach out to a division manager (and ask for referrals to a sales rep) they are more likely to tell you a sales rep they used to work with or someone the previously liked, also if you do the phone call correctly, that manager may like your approach and start asking questions to see if you can recruit for their company. Getting a referral for a sales rep and a new business lead - boom.

Get out there, mingle at industry events, connect with folks on LinkedIn, and chat up potential candidates. Even if they're not job hunting now, forming those connections can pay off big time down the road when they're ready to switch things up. It's all about nurturing those ties for future opportunities!
