The best answer, if it is true, is to say, "I looked at the LinkedIn profiles of your employees. I saw that they stay with you for a long time and that you promote from within. That is exactly what I am looking for." That answer focuses on you, but also reassures the company that you do not see them as a stepping stone in your career. Accordingly, you are worth their investment in you of time and money. It also does not sound like meaningless flattery, which will "turn off" any serious employer.

When I saw this question, my snap answer is DO YOUR RESEARCH! Find out about the mission, vision, values, and culture of the company. Search people who work there and look at their career paths. See if the company has been in the news. The more you know, the better.

In my experience asking this question in every first interview, I'd say there's no "right" or "wrong" answer to it. Each of you will have a unique and valid reason to apply for a role in a company. Just be honest and share your story. However, if we think about best practices, I'll recommend anyone who's looking for a job to research and seek to understand. Even if you do not think that you are applying for THE job of your lifetime, there is always a chance to find how your personal values are aligned with the values of the company. But to do that you need to: a) know what is important to you. Could be environment, seniority, salary, mission anything like that. b) you should ask what is important to the company. Avoid super basic questions like "What's your mission". For that, you should check the website. Try to understand what is the ultimate goal for a year, or what is a big challenge that they try to solve now or in a few years. What's the impact that they want to have? Then bring their inspirations to yours and explain how those two could co-exist together in the impact you will create.

I think first and foremost, I have to think about how my experience aligns with that of the company especially the sync between my personal and professional experiences. Lived experiences are something that people shy away from in an interview but have always been a strength for me. So I look at how my lived experience aligns with the company’s vision, and my job description and take it from there. In my response, I would explore how my why aligns with their why. What is my story in the organization story and what profession and educational experience even make me a right candidate to work there? In every or any circumstance, I will lead with why and use stories, and contextual examples to connect with the company's core values.

And if not you actually don't want to work there 😉 One of the things I've seen over and over in my career coachings: people overestimate the title of the job and underestimate the impact the actual team, values and culture has on your job satisfaction and performance. So if you find out it's a match, this is definitely something to emphasise on as more and more companies understand to hire for human fit, not only hard skills. And fun fact: sometimes even if this particular job doesn't work out, new opportunities may arise if the company sees you as a valuable match to the culture.

There are many reasons why someone would want to work for a company. In my humble opinion -- if a company matches close to your VALUES it's a BIG ONE. If you can connect those values to your values (make sure you give examples of your values in action as well, as this highlights your knowledge of their values), this would be a massive positive. Of course, with this match, you will more likely stay longer, and there is more chance of you staying around longer, enjoying the job even more so and from a company perspective you will be seen as a better cultural fit. Another type of personal connection is through the people you know. If someone in your network worked at the company and loved it, mention that in the interview. Even if the current/former employee isn't a close friend, talk to them about what the liked about the company. Often to demonstrate true passion and connection, this is more easily done when you truly ‘feel’ something and don’t have to manufacture it. Give voice to how you have been impacted or connect personally to brand, product, culture, etc. Use a solid storytelling framework to ensure you are able to engage an emotion in the listener. In order to connect/influence through your story, you must have done some research in advance and then build out a concise, direct & powerfully convincing connection.

For me in my client network of public sector and charity based clients, it's important that they have prospective employees who have personals values that closely align with their organisational values. I've interviewed hundreds of candidates as an HR Business Partner. Two things always impressed me. First, value creation -- explain how your knowledge, skills or abilities could create something useful for our organization. Connect it to our most pressing challenges or opportunities. Practicing is important but how you practice matters! For some people, writing out in full sentences to practice helps but for others, trying to memorize exact words ends up making the answer feel wooden. For me, I jot down words that I want to recall and then I can take it from there. The goal is to be practiced so you can be authentic, not robotic!

You don’t want to sound scripted, but you do want to sound and be prepared and sincere. Practice your answer out loud so you hear it; record yourself and watch your delivery (sometimes how you are saying something differs from what you are saying); and practice with a trusted friend or coach (I do practice interviews with many clients - and often more than once!).

It's helpful to practice and film yourself answering the question. Then, you can review the recording and improve it. You can also practice with another person who will then give you feedback on the content of your response and how you communicate.

My advice, if you're really interested in the role and company, is to bring up something unique about the company that might not be the first thing people think of (of course, after thorough research, avoid "inventing on spot"). The way you achieve that is what I admire and see as a perfect place for me because the HOW is as important as the WHAT." And, very important, shift the perspective from what the company can do for you to what you can do for the company, tying it into your own growth and learning. Best "selling" tool is authenticity.

I would advise the candidate to be careful when answering this question. "I applied for your ... position because it matches my experience, skills and expertise. I also learned about your organizational culture and it aligns with my core values. In the interview process, I would like to learn more about the position and the company so I can assess whether we could work together successfully." is a great answer. In this way, the candidate declares his/her interest in the position, but also indicates that he/she needs more information before deciding whether he/she wants to work for the company.

I personally see the autonomy that one has in functioning on a day yo day basis as a point for the consideration of a position in a company . The freedom to explore newer arenas and the freedom to diversify along with the team will help
