What do you do if you want to continuously grow as a leader in your career?

Listen attentively to the perspectives of others, welcome diverse viewpoints, and use feedback as a catalyst for personal and professional growth. Reflect on feedback with an open mind, identify patterns or recurring themes, and develop action plans to address areas for improvement.

There are hundreds of practical suggestions to give, but if I could boil down growth as a leader into 2 core buckets they'd be: 1) Look at the best leaders you know and write down the things you value about their leadership. Seek to emulate those traits in your own way. 2) Continuously learn about yourself. Pay attention to what it's like being on the other side of your leadership, which requires you to seek feedback on a regular basis from people. The only way we grow is by getting clarity over what we're trying to grow into, and being honest with ourselves about the gap between there and here.

A mentor once to be to 'always be a student.' He was talking about making sure I didn't grow an ego, or consider myself an expert. The strategy he used for this was never saying 'I know.' Why? Because when you know something, it's impossible learn. Your brain shuts off from that possibility. Feedback is gold. It's how we improve and if we're being defensive or 'knowing' it doesn't work.

To keep getting better as a leader, ask for feedback from others like colleagues and mentors. Don't get defensive when they give you suggestions—listen and learn from them. Leadership is not only leading people but also creating group of leaders underneath by developing their skills. So Learning and sharing of knowledge is the key. Time to time feedback, Self introspection is mandatory. To become a successful leader you have to upgrade your skills as per industry requirements, work on technical skills, soft skills and keep on motivating your team members. The Success of a leader lies in the success of the team.

And every quarter I create goals which can be measured easily at the end of the quarter. Having this doc helps you to clearly set the intentions for the rest of the quarter and keeps you accountable. we review these goals in the middle of the quarter for a quick check-in.

This is what will make it easier to engage your curiosity when you can see the opporuntiy that it can create. Making it fun will make it easier. Set goals & challenges that excite you rather than "beat" yourself.

So honing your leadership style is a continuous learning process, utilising information from a number of different sources.

Life can be though at times and, as leader, you will be challenged quite often on your prioritization skills. One thing I learned in the last few years is that you should never stop learning. That is, prioritize learning each week and be consistent with your decision to invest in yourself to achieve longer term objectives. Learning will give you the energy and confidence you need to navigate in your leadership role and will change the focus on you to recharge and up skill. In very busy times it was the only break I could afford and the one that helped me to adapt in difficult situations. I was able to see different perspectives and understand better the environment around me with the new skills I learned (in trainings, mentorships etc.).

For me Networking emanates (in a post COVID world) from a guiding principle of pivoting from "Learning by myself to Learning with and through Others". That's the reality of the day - the boundaries of organizations and industries are blurring and merging as we speak. There is so much we dont know, there is also such much we know which can be of leverage to others - the exchange of this knowledge is the currency of the current world. So pick 2-3 areas you feel passionate about either to share or learn or both and then find spaces both within organizations and also outside organizations to participate. Networking is also about finding peer coaches, mentors, etc. Keep and eye out on who might benefit from it and put the right foot forward.

In my opinion, networking widely is incredibly helpful for continuously growing as a leader in your career. Most importantly it exposes you to different viewpoints, and backgrounds, which keeps your learning journey exciting and ongoing. Doesn’t mean just trying to please but listen for opportunities to build skills, 2) always be learning through books, articles, courses, and reading LinkedIn, 3) identify professionals with the skill(s) you want or at higher levels you desire and connect with them, follow them, ask advice of them. Essentially becoming a shadow mentee without calling out a formal mentor relationship. This helps you figure out a way and find solutions in extremely alien situations and that gives you a real jump in your skills and self confidence too!

Its very important to be in touch with knowing your strengths, interests and aspirations. I call it the triage of BEING-DOING-BECOMING. Being is knowing who you are as a person and what are your core personal values. They define your boundaries of behavior. Doing revolves around your strengths at work and also the topics or themes that you are naturally attracted to. Plan clear goals in the areas of doing and ensure what you do are not just bright shining objects yet also aligned to your values and sense of being. Finally, as you have your Being and Doing clarified, start reflecting on your Becoming - what legacy do you want to leave behind. That's how to build your own personal Leadership Brand.
