There are many things that one needs to do to succeed in the first year of Executive Management. But a few of the most important things that one needs to do are Build very strong relationships, Effective communication, Set clear goals, Time management, and continuously learn & adapting. If one can manage these things, one can succeed.

It is less about setting clear expectations to the team but setting the direction and vision for the strategy backed with credible objectives that are measurable (SMART) and then you can lay out clear expectations cross departmentally and within your teams which support the vision and directions being achieved.

Then meet with executives as well to understand vision, performance measurements, priorities, goals and milestones. This will help you to see if everyone is on the same page, minimize misunderstandings and establish trust and credibility. This allow you to set clear expectations, assigning role and responsibilities to achieve goals

Some ideas on getting started: 1. Meet with people at all levels - other executives, managers, supervisors, line or field professionals, etc. 2. Meet your key customers- The 20% who provide 80% of your revenue. 3. Read analyst reports on company performance. 4. Meet your key suppliers.

I’d add get a coach or mentor, informal or formal, just someone you can offload to, be challenged from, ask questions of and, a person to be in regular contact with.

Building and working on your network is critical. Several years ago I decided to change my approach because I realised that networking was a skill. It's so easy to get suckered into attending event after event, sometimes shaking the same hand 3 or 4 times a week. I thought carefully about what sort of people I wanted to meet, balancing professional and personal preferences. I focussed on three areas: the local chamber of commerce, a local charity, and Birmingham as a city. In doing so, I was able to use my time effectively. I built relationships at senior levels across various businesses and institutions. Most importantly, I could have fun and do some fun, too.

With your new role, you should trust your teammates and their feedback and no need to judge for their past actions and current feedback but it doesn't mean that you should not criticise just only listening with one way. Ask strong questions, understand company cultures and visible or nonvisible rules , structure and related processes as well. All these are learning that are some kind of torch to show your path into the darkness. And no need to make a hasty decision but also if your experience is good enough about the task, act and make it the right way and show your experience to all stakeholders. It would be turned back to your " wiser & respected executive manager".

One thing I have found helpful is to understand what skills you need to work on to be effective at the Executive Management level. This can be done through taking appropriate assessments. Then create a plan on how you are going to develop these skills and who you are going to work with to ensure you do develop these skills. Also work out the 3-4 areas that you really value-add in for your organisation and spend most of your time focused on them. If you are too busy, look at what you can delegate to others. You may be great in particular areas and it is worth working out if they are really value-adding to your organisation and your role.

I perceive that a leader asking for advice or suggesting approaches not the one-and-only do it, providing boundaries instead of saying the how-to is said to be "weak", still. This in my opinion is a particular weakness of "typical German" leadership. Is there a "typical"... After all? Why is someone being able to show empathy with many of us not finding immediately an appropriate solution and reflecting ourselves that from every topics you solved you another question or even series of questions, being perceived "unable to lead". When your team is developing their own ideas and does mistakes, you simply are unable to lead even when developing further from such pitfalls by continuous improvement and learning, learning, learning.

Trying to be someone else at work, not the real you is not sustainable and not real. Being the real you builds trust, shows integrity and is being truthful to yourself.

The second item is to show respect and humility asking open questions investing time with your team. Once you complete these two steps you will be ready to start your journey.
