A helpful tip I have found when reviewing the literature is organizing your articles on an organizer. I create literature tables on Google Sheets or Microsoft Excel with columns holding titles of information I want to explore across all articles in my literature review (i.e.: Authors, Title, Research Question, Dependent Variable, Methods, Participants, Results, Implications, etc.). Having this organizer makes it easier to find specific sources when you go to write your manuscript, refer to particular studies as you work on your own research, and clearly express your takeaways.

It is critical that time is taken to explore all dimensions of the topic and/or construct of interest. Only including sources that support one’s hypothesis leaves the proposal vulnerable to researcher bias. A well-rounded and thorough review of literature examines all sides.

The best way to learn about a new research question is to read about it, I read for 1 hour every two days about my research topic. This helps me first of all to understand the topic and also to familiarize myself with the current updates in the field.

This section and the following seem to have a bias toward quantitative and positivist rather than engaged, transformative, and (post)qualitative research. I think writers, especially doc students, need to keep in mind the audience they are writing their proposal for. At the end of the day we want our work to get funded or in the case of a doc student they want their dissertation approved. Audience matters and we could end our chances before they begin if we don't recognize this. To improve I would recommend that writers get access to successful research proposals from that funding agency or from students who have had your advisor as their dissertation advisor (in the case of doc students). This will give you a frame in which to think through your own project.

Telling a compelling story that is easy to understand and can get people behind you is a key element of a good research proposal. I also found it effective to include numbers such as the scale of the problem and costs.
