If needed, I’ll add a touch of humor to lighten the mood and regain their attention, often using a playful comment or a quick joke to refocus them without confrontation. This balanced, approachable style helps keep the class engaged while maintaining a respectful learning environment.

Instead of losing temper and rebuking students, maintain calm and composed demeanor. Seek the attention of the disruptive students and channelise their energy in the right direction. In a lighter vein you can say: I think these students have something serious to discuss. Ask them politely to share with the class. Create a student centric class. Cater for different learning styles and incorporate interactive activities to captivate attention of students and keep them focused. Setting clear rules for desired behaviour in the beginning and implementing these strictly can prevent misbehaviour.

To handle the disruptions, you need to first set clear rules. This is so that your students would know what would happen if they were to break your rules. You should also set clear expectations as to what type of behaviour you expect from them. This is so that they would know how they should behave in class. You should also have a talk with these students when there is a break in between the lessons. This is so that you can try to convince them to follow the rules.

Encouraging positive interaction, through well-planned lessons that require participation, in the chat helps maintain an academic and learning-focussed tone. Building opportunities for students to use the chat during the instructional period also gives you, as the instructor, time to moderate and work with learners who are abusing the chat, without interrupting direct instruction. This effort may best be served with an instructional aide in the room to moderate the chat. Frequently, platforms for virtual learning do not adequately allow an instructor to present and moderate simultaneously.

I will follow up privately with the students involved to understand their behaviour and explain how it impacts the learning environment. I will also engage students by making lessons interactive and incorporating various teaching methods to keep their attention.
