What strategies have you found effective for staying authentic in business networking?
-
It’s so hard trying to keep up a front - if you try to be anything other than you, you’ll quickly find networking really draining. But nerves are totally normal, so don’t give yourself a hard time if you find it difficult to relax and be totally yourself if you’re in a new environment with new people. Look for a business community you can be a regular part of and get to know people well - there’s lots of value in spending quality time with good people, for your business growth and your own.
-
Body language, tone, sincerity - all of these are paramount. No matter who we try to network with, the other person can easily determine authenticity (or lack thereof). Over enthusiasm can hurt our efforts if it comes across as ingenuine or 'trying too hard'. Keep it straight to the point, even if the ask is rather awkward or difficult to put across.

If you're finding it difficult to be yourself in a networking group, it might be time to think about whether you're in the right place. Networking should allow you to express your true self, share ideas freely, and make connections that feel genuine. If you're in a group where you feel pressured to act differently, it’s likely not the right place. Look for spaces where you feel comfortable and valued for who you are. When you're in the right environment, staying authentic becomes effortless, and your connections will be more meaningful. Networking is about relationships, so find a group that lets you be yourself.

It is so important to be yourself. When you try to be something you are not it is both mentally and physically draining. It is important to find your tribe and connect with people who truly value what you bring. One of my biggest tips is to show up as your authentic self and recognise that you won't be everyone's "cup of tea"!

To retain authenticity in business networking, focus on developing real relationships while remaining transparent and true to yourself. Actively listen to others and demonstrate genuine interest in their points of view. Instead of adhering to expectations, share your own unique experiences and ideals. Set firm limits and adhere to your ideals. Follow up thoughtfully, expressing gratitude for contacts and possibilities. Use personal experiences to demonstrate your views and make encounters remember. By being loyal to your identity and beliefs, you may develop meaningful, long-term connections.
-
Just be yourself. Unless you’re a horrible person, then pretend to be someone else. As you can see, my authentic self is a little bit grumpy and sarcastic.
-
It’s easy to feel the pressure to reinvent yourself with so much networking advice out there. But remember, the best training is about enhancing who you already are, not changing it. New skills should add to your unique strengths, not replace them.
-
Staying authentic in business networking is definitely a challenge, but it’s so key to building real, lasting connections. For me, being clear about my values has been essential—I always make sure that my interactions reflect who I am, not just what I’m trying to achieve. I’ve also found that focusing on quality over quantity in networking helps. It’s better to nurture a few deep, meaningful connections than to try and connect with everyone. Would love to hear more about how others balance authenticity and networking goals!
