A good chunk of this issue can be prevented before it even happens by building and being part of a networking group which actively fosters collaboration and a give first attitude. This often seems to arise when the networking group promotes pitching and selling to its members. Don't go networking to sell to people who aren't there to buy. Go networking to build your referral team, to collaborate with others, to learn and grow and to give freely of your own knowledge and experience. That way networking will be something that really works and you will love doing it to.

I encountered a competitor who viewed our group as a threat. By initiating a conversation about our shared goal of expanding market reach, I highlighted the benefits of collaboration. We identified complementary strengths: they had robust distribution channels, while we excelled in product innovation. This led to a strategic partnership where we co-developed a new product line, increasing our market presence and driving revenue for both companies. Acknowledging shared goals and fostering open communication transformed rivalry into a fruitful collaboration, showcasing that competition can lead to innovative alliances.

Let them shine, find them referrals. Seeing someone as a threat usually comes from a place of fear or insecurity. Be the reason they feel more confident and barriers will slowly fall.

Another thing that works for me, is finding ways to contribute value to these people. This can be through reaching out with my skills, or sharing ideas that would help the work they are doing. People like people that are supportive of their work. That way, they are able to think of you when opportunities come along their way. They'd usually think of you first before thinking of someone else who isn't contributing to the work they are doing. This way can help dispel any form of sense of rivalry.
