How do you design and implement mathematic interventions for struggling students?

Sources of data should also include the parent, the teacher, the student, and the tutor. Parents are the first to tell me how/why their kid is having trouble with math; this "assessment" is typically informed by the teacher. As a professional math tutor, I ask the student why they struggle with math. The student's response almost always differs from the parent/teacher's response. Once you have gathered data from a variety of sources, you can begin to identify specific skill gaps. Here are some questions to ask yourself: - What are the student's strengths and weaknesses? - What are the prerequisite skills and concepts the student needs to master? - What are the common errors or misconceptions the student makes? - How does the student approach and solve mathematical problems? The more precise and detailed you can be in defining the problem, the more effective you can be in addressing it.

When identifying skill gaps and/or misconceptions you must be flexible in your thinking. Does the person understand but explain it in an unexpected way? Is the person correct through the first three steps and then uses one misconception? You must really understand the content and connections between topics to narrow down the specific gap/misconception.

In my tutoring sessions I have found the practice of allowing students to present/teach a certain subset of a topic to be extremely valuable. This gives ownership to a manageable subset of the information they need to know, as well as motivating students to present material to their classmates in a way that is engaging for all. For example in a proofs class if each student is allowed to make a 5-10 minute presentation on a certain proof that goes through all the requisite steps this will add a level of memorability for that topic to the student who presented on it. If each student is then reassigned a different set of topics each week and presents on those, they will improve both their confidence as a presenter and their mathematics.

The form should describe the intervention and how data from the intervention will be used. The form should also include the researcher's/teacher's contact information in case the parent/guardian has questions about the intervention.

You should always be gathering data to be a more effective educator. Track grades, engagement, energy levels in the class. Ask students about their experience and implement your findings. Make teacher-student interaction a normal part of class and reduce the level of discomfort of students as this also improves their learning. If intervention is necessary then by the time you implement it you should already know where to put it in place. Students who are aware of their mathematics learning can be taught in a more natural way and can be brought up to speed in a way that reflects their ability. Implementation details can be decided between student and teacher and can be adjusted naturally from there as the student progresses.

As a tutor, one of my goals has always been maintaining close communication with the parents. I believe tutors and parents should collaborate to boost students' personal growth. Finding the right intervention for each student is the responsibility of both the parents and teachers. Over the years i have found by letting students pick the questions they want to answer from a group that examines the same skill set is very effective, a form of natural differentiation. The biggest confidence booster is when a student gets the question correct, moreso knowing they chose the question. They then develop a zeal to wantt to try another. Interventions might look like accepting that it will be a journey, and the first step is to have the student willingly want to embark on it.

COUNSELLING. The first and most important step in intervention design or programs is counseling, where the instructor or designer talks to the student about the realities of where they are and where they are oath to be. In this stage, one can verify the history of the student as it relates to their mathematics learning journey and then discuss the way forward and how the intervention will be beneficial to both the learner and the instructor. The learner must be involved in designing the intervention program because their input and insight will help the program succeed; in other words, the learner understands his cognitive wiring better than any other person. Most importantly, the instructor must be a sympathetic, knowledgeable adult.
