How can you tailor your leadership style to different audiences?

Leaders ought to have an idea of why your listeners are there. You may not be 100% certain, but chances are you have some clue. Make sure your audience knows you understand their concerns as well as their needs. Demonstrate that by sharing them and see how the room leans in! When it comes to engaging your audience, one's leadership STYLE is not necessarily related to being empathic and relevant. Curating your impact- in an artfully dynamic way- is a separate entity that can and should be developed for anyone who calls themselves a leader!

Leaders who are unaware of their audience risk communication breakdown and misalignment of expectations. This lack of awareness may lead to misunderstanding and decreased engagement.

En cada uno y cada una de nosotros existen cualidades de liderazgo. Lo interesante es que se habla más del estilo y no del rol del líder. Quizá porque entender como llegar a tu equipo no es ser lo que ellos esperan de ti, sino ser tu mismo y ayudar a otros a hacerlo. Al encontrar el propio estilo y aquello que mejor hacemos o más desemos hacer crecemos juntos. En lo personal dar lo mejor en un proyecto es aprender a conciliar los objetivos de los integrantes del team y sus metas personales, darles apoyo con los desafíos laborales de cada rol y jamás perder el horizonte de negocios.

This is so often missed ... I have clients who believe they can deliver the same message to every audience without thinking of their gender, age, geography, ethnicity, beliefs, professions, culture, etc ... yes at its core your messages are the same but the words you chose to use, the stories you tell, the delivery you use ... all must be customized ... .the moment they can't understand you ... that's when they tune out. and you don't get them back. Do your homework, KNOW your audience.

The power is in the pre interview. I like to pre interview as many people as I can to find out what motivates them personally and professionally before I give a keynote. For example I gave a keynote to 1500 women hoteliers at the San Diego Convention Center. I pre-interviewed 6 women to find out what keeps them up at night and tailored my keynote to address that pain point at the end. 2. Have a side bar individually with stakeholders before a big meeting to understand where folks are on a topic (left, center, right) before sharing it widely. 3. I spent a career delivering business news on television on networks that had several viewing audiences. I had to know way more content in order to tailor it for the audience I was speaking to

My perspective is framed around consumer centric focus. In other words one much research extensively about your audience (targeted consumer) demographics , psychographics, benefit sought What is their connection to the topic

You need to do your homework ahead of time to learn the language of your audience and speak to them in words they understand. I'm not going to write a science-oriented story for Cosmopolitan Magazine! The best presentations I've ever given have been those that pair my voice with my audiences' needs.

First off, being a good leader means being a good team player. Knowing your audience / market is key to success. Ask them what they want, what they need, what they like and dislike. Be authentic and dont just hear what they are saying, but listen to them and find out what matters to them to gain their trust and loyalty. Listen with the intent to understand, not to reply. Demonstrate you understand them and don't be afraid of change. Be prepared to shift in the market in order to attract, retain and maximize the market you are targeting by communicating with your target market and demonstrating you can deliver what they want and need.

Are you authentic? As a servant leader I believe the messaging may change based on the audience, but who you are as a leader should be at your core and true to your values. The situation may call for a more direct approach if time is critical, whereas with the luxury of time it allows for a more nurturing approach. Changing your actual leadership style vs messaging might send mixed signals and result in a gap in trust. I have learned that as a leader it begins with you, but is not about you. The audience is everything because they are why you are in front of them.

Again I bring the perspective now of an Educator. I truly believe, regardless of the audience or the topic , being authentic is crucial. As someone who studied and works in the EI field , being empathetic is important. And… at the end of the day … you are a performer ensuring the messages get across in a manner that will appeal to learning styles - bring humour.

Tailoring leadership style for different audiences is imperative for connection. One needs to understand the distinct perspective within each group to cultivate a safe, collaborative and inclusive environment. What are your thoughts on this?

Studies show that our style of delivery and the way we use our voice are 93% of how we resonate. Make sure you are on target always. Today's world, with short attention spans and over stimulated minds means you MUST be super engaging. Interactivity is crucial. So is ensuring there is no barrier between you and your audience ... no podium or desk, add appropriate gestures that illustrate what you are saying ... and make sure your eye contact includes the whole audience no matter the size. That's how you show you care ... and leaders must have that.

La flexibilidad a la hora de confrontar un mensaje con los otros habla de tu capacidad de escuchar a tu audiencia, de tu nivel de comprensión de otras realidades y sobre todo de tu capacidad de autocrítica. Las mediciones de audiencia y sus resultados nos confrontan a un espejo, saber reconocer nuestros puntos flojos -aunque nos duela, nos dará sabiduría y capacidad de mejorar en el futuro.

If I find that my brand of leadership isn't landing (as a woman of color and very direct person, I'm aware that it doesn't always land), I find another person to deliver the same message in the room in their signature way. As long as I'm being of service and the end user is benefitting, my job as a leader is done.

Adjusting one's leadership style is key to ensuring communication is being received effectively. I remember a time when I was new to a company, and my manager solely led from the laissez-faire style. For a seasoned employee who is comfortable in their role, this may be a great approach and arguably even a preferred style; however, since I was new to my role, it simply made it a challenge to learn from. I asked for many clarifications, and there were times I felt I may be bothering them with too many questions. Whenever I work with a newer employee or intern, I remember that experience and become consciously aware of my style to ensure it meets the needs of the employee and includes the right level of support for growth.

Sometimes we pay so much attention to the content of our deliveries, that we don't give enough credit to the importance of body language. Knowing what to do with your hands, being sure not to let your eyes wander and learning how to sit on a chair are all as important as your messages. What you do can detract from what you say --

Good communication requires clarity. Like so many leaders have said: I'd have written a shorter speech if I had more time. Edit edit edit ... avoid redundancy. Avoid trite phrases and crutch words. And ... as the father of communications Aristotle said, to be relatable become trustworthy through your expertise, be understandable, and evoke feelings. Ethos, Logos, Pathos

For example, I'm kicking off a cohort of a Mastermind this Saturday. At the retreat, I will outline my expectations of them and what their expectations should be of me. Ill share where we should be communicating (email, slack, text) and how quickly they should expect a response. I'm experimenting with AI so a version of me can be available to this cohort and they can leverage my knowledge from all the assets I have created, when I'm not readily available in person

I personally find out loads about my audience by observing the way enter a room. They literally give their thoughts to you for analysis! Body language, facial expression, are exceptional in delivering an accurate assessment of the needs, of your audience,by knowing this, much can be learned about what they want….what motivates them. I find this to be a valuable insight in leading them successfully, motivating them to be their best self.🤓

Although you can tailor your work towards your audience, it's important to also be true to yourself. Speak about topics that fire you up and topics that will move you towards accomplishing your own goals. When you grow in your business and you become more confident and more involved in your field, you'll make the most of your messages.
