When it comes to using selection criteria, a critical aspect is often overlooked: aligning the criteria for hiring with those for evaluating performance. To address it, I propose role-specific scorecards that serve both purposes: selection and performance evaluation. Misalignment often occurs due to TA and Talent Management operating in silos. To enhance effectiveness, we need a holistic approach across the employee lifecycle, from hiring to performance evaluation and and ideally extending further to support skill development and career growth.

Selection criteria are the standards and competencies that you use to evaluate and compare candidates for a job. They help you to identify the best fit for the role and your organization. But how do you know if your selection criteria are effective and reliable? How can you measure their impact on your hiring outcomes and performance? In this article, we will discuss some methods and metrics that you can use to assess the effectiveness of your selection criteria.

1 Define your goals

Before you can measure the effectiveness of your selection criteria, you need to define what you want to achieve with them. What are the specific skills, knowledge, abilities, and behaviors that you are looking for in your candidates? How do they align with your organizational values, culture, and strategy? How do they relate to the job requirements, responsibilities, and expectations? By clarifying your goals, you can set clear and relevant criteria that match your needs and priorities.
