How can you effectively build relationships with journalists?

Forge strong bonds with journalists by deeply knowing your target. Research their interests, previous work, and preferred communication style. Tailor your pitches to resonate with their needs and audiences. This personalized approach fosters genuine connections, making your interactions more valuable and productive.

Be a helpful, considerate human. Reporters are on tight deadlines trying to provide content that's relevant on a non-existent budget (if you've ever worked in-house corp comms, you know what this is like!). Be ready to answer their questions immediately and turn around a quick interview subject who's prepared to give a great interview about an interesting subject - or at least an interesting hook. And just be a nice human...

Some thoughts: 1) Know what I cover. Cision is not always accurate. Google me and read my most recent stories. 2) NEVER send a release with an embargo unless you ask first. I do not honor them. Embargoes try to take control away from the news organization. We aren't here to make your life easier; we're here to report for our audience. 3) Do not lie for your employer. We understand no comment. But if you lie to us, and we print it, and we discover it was a lie, we will never trust you again. 4) An exclusive needs to truly be an exclusive. Don't play news organizations off each other. Google and search engines make it soooo easy to find out who had a story first.

Having been on both sides of this discussion - a journalist and a company reaching out to journalists - it's not always what you think. Journalists are flooded with people who want to speak with them and build relationships that motivate them to be an influencer for your topic. It's not so easy. More than a great product - how does your product make an impact? Relevancy - align with the journalist's focus. Real world case studies - how is someone using your product to impact their business/life? Exclusivity - executive interviews, first briefings, inclusion in your customer events. Add value - a journalist doesn't want to hear you say exactly what's in your press release. Be prepared - don't show and not be able to answer questions.

Building a relationship with journalists... It helps tremendously knowing what journalists want, what they need, understand how their newsrooms, editors, and producers think -- I'm a former TV news reporter, anchor, and producer. I've been in the trenches, so I become the best assignment editor journalists have ever had -- and they always seem to appreciate it.

The easiest way is sincerity and consistency. Don’t only engage when you need something. Read their work consistently, engage with it, uphold it, etc. And for as long as I’ve been in this industry - which is a LONG time - reporters still complain that PR pitches are off target because the PR exec doesn’t do their homework. So, RESEARCH and put the time in to figure out the types of stories the reporter writes and wants. Pitch accordingly.

Respect their time. Understand their beat and media outlet. Do your homework before reaching out. If pitching something timely, make it a clear and short communication. Later, keep in "light" touch by occasionally offering story ideas, and not always ones that would benefit your company/client.

Start with positive intent - even if the interview subject is a tough one. Be FOR something, not just against something as you help the reporter round out the story. I always tried to get to know reporters as people which helped in the tough moments.

In my experience, journalists appreciate PR professionals that can add value by connecting the dots between what they've written about and what might be a new angle or point of view that could add further insight to the story. Thought leadership should spark an idea for a follow-up article or conversation about the topic that adds further dimension or clarity.

I've always found it effective to review their editorial calendar ahead of time and then suggest ways in which we can support their editorial goals. Often we end up co-ideating on content that would be compelling for their readers. This ensures the content we produce will be valuable for the journalist and publication while delivering strategic thought leadership for our company. Collaborating with the media combined with quality content generates a mutual win.

Remember that YOU aren't their customer. I've seen so many press releases that are adverts dressed up as editorial. The first thing an editor will ask is - what's in this for my reader? The second thing they'll ask is - does this business advertise? If the answer is no to the second question, then the answer to the first HAS to be 'lots of value'.

Identify a few journalists who specialize in your field of interest. Forge a partnership with them that's of mutual value! If you have a unique point-of-view in an emerging topic, they will be willing to partner with you and amplify the thought. Likewise, journalists meet with several thought leaders across industries and they can accelerate your learning via 'multiplier' effect.

Again, the way journalism is describe here sounds like it is a type of journalism that drives intrigue. If the journalist is looking for appeasement, that is not journalism. Find a journalist that loves truth, loves to think, wants to learn and cares about some topic with great integrity.. If we start trying to appeal to much to a journalist's approval we are noy going to focus on what matters.. which is why do you exists, and why does it matter to humanity.. who are what are you helping

Know the challenges, needs and wants of the journalist - and the editor - for a proper understanding of what represents value. Manage expectations with transparency and honesty. Build a relationship based on trust. Only then can we comprehend what is of value to offer it.

Journalists are creatives, but most appreciate the value of additional resources and perspectives. We're busy people, and if you can offer us something that will save us time or give our stories more depth, we're much more likely to work with you. Think of ways your knowledge or resources could enhance the story we are working on.

The old "offer value" chestnut is not exactly the best advice when it comes to dealing with journalists. Because what journalists value is often a little different than what brands or thought leaders value. Journalists don't need "value" (which usually means information), they need stories. Stories, by definition, have some type of human angle. Remember that.

As a journalist, time is always of the essence. If you are responsive and readily available to provide information or answer questions, it will make our job much easier. We often turn around multiple stories daily, with little room for delays or missed opportunities. We'll remember and appreciate your promptness and reliability.

Totally been there! Going extra mile and responding promptly not only makes you the go-to person but also sets the stage for a genuine connection. It's a bit like a dance – you give a little, and when you need it, they've got your back.

Ask about deadlines then be fast and accurate with your responses. If you cannot deliver within the time frame, say so and offer an alternative.

Presenting ideas at multiple scales of detail is helpful... Learn to present ideas in a form you could pitch in an elevator, A form you could pitch under five minutes, a form you could dialogue on over coffee and still bring a great story.... This allows engagement at every speed...

Once you get their attention , You have to top it up with consistent communication till their and your objectives our achieved . Truth and Empathy go a long way . Remember that their life is more unpredictable that anyone's . Respect their time over yours .

Being responsive has been a cornerstone of my interactions with journalists. I make sure to be available to answer their queries promptly, provide additional information as needed, and maintain open lines of communication. I also agree. And if a person is not available or not interested in being contacted or participating, that's fine. But a "no, thank you" response is appreciated, so that we can continue to look for other sources.

In my experience, the easiest way to distinguish yourself with anyone (including journalists) is to be authentic and consistent. A kind note of support or a social share will always stand out when it is done repeatedly over time and with enthusiasm.

It will take more than a fair share of effort to break the ice with a journalist. having worked in a media company, i have seen many personality types of a single journalist and many typed of journalists with a predictable personality. In all cases , your follow up has to come first. It does not matter if they they have the time or not.

Whether the interaction resulted from your pitch or their call, follow up with additional unrelated opportunities to generate content and/or a story, once their article has been published.

Its best to not try to banter with journalists unless their is substance in your communication. They too like to take a break , talk about anything but work. There were times when I would just send a cup of chai and snack to their desk, knowing it was evening and their story was about to hit the press. Meet them for their cigarette breaks even if you dont smoke. once in a while wont kills you . Be genuine , nothing puts journalists off than fake conversations and show off. They are friendly info hungry humans that can be your biggest allies in marketing and vice versa.

WIth social media, you don't have to beg to publish, focus on being valuable , sharing your work, with our without a journalist. if you are good, people with in time show up.. never feel desperate

Relationships cannot be one story wonders. You need to cultivate and nurture a relationship with time, education, hand holding, supporting on timelines, with meaningful story pegs, trends and value adds on a continuous basis and not only when you are looking for a story to come out. I feel research, understanding the beat and the industry as much as the journalist if not more, understanding the way a story is developed are key steps too that go a long way.

Treat journalists like your normal relationships that require attention and investment. Reach out, stay in touch, check in with them not only when you have a pitch but at a human level. Respect their areas of expertise, tailor your PR pitches and have ongoing relationships. With journalists focused on multicultural outlets this investment is more critical.

For example, when a company I worked for went through seasonal ebbs and flows related to client work, journalists in the cities in which we operated would reach out to me regarding issues related to workflows and business processes. Each and every journalist is always searching for a great story to publish. This is their main goal. Provide that story or offer a way to get there and you'll have a good starting point for a great relationship.

As PR professionals and as product marketing or product management, we are experts in our fields. The digital world has created an environment where everyone has a journalistic perspective and a voice in the digital discussion. For me, I usually have more ideas about potential articles than I could possible write. I try to keep a list of my own points of view, so that when I have conversations with journalists, I can offer them some of the ideas. I have had several journals pick up the ideas and write them, usually with a little bit of input from me, as well. Instead of just pitching your article ideas to the journalist, why not set up 30 minutes to help the journalist brainstorm new angles on articles.
