How can real estate professionals develop a global perspective?

As someone who has worked in both the US and UK property markets, I would say one of the most important things to know is how are things done differently in the country you wish to work/collaborate in. For example, the way properties are sold and agents are paid commission is very different in the US vs. the UK. Commission rates vary from country to country. Every place does not have an MLS. The best advice I could give someone is to do some research as to the differences so that assumptions are not made that could be detrimental down the line if a transaction proceeds.

I find with international listings it is always better to be able to travel to see the properties in person, rather than just using images provided by the seller or agent. When you go in person, so many questions that might arise from a buyer are instantly answered. It helps you be a better salesperson to represent the property in the best light.

Take the time and make the effort to visit new countries that interest you. Spend time in each as a solo visitor, absorbing the culture, the architecture and the planning. Gather glimpses of, and insight into local perspectives, considerations and deal breakers. Create the foundation for developing a local network of connections and friendships. Remember to play the long game, as it is not possible to be a “drop-in expert” in multiple cities around the globe when it comes to real estate. Go Get Em!

Never underestimate the influence of cultural perspective on the work at hand. If you have ever had the opportunity to work for a company that is based from a country other than your own native country, you will inevitably experience some culture shock in adapting to a difference in culturally-bound viewpoints, temperaments, work style and procedure. It can be mind blowing, actually, but your job is to remain open and intrigued by these differences, using your own critical faculties to determine how these different perspectives may be better or worse than your own culturally- influenced point of view. Treat these opportunities as invaluable learning experiences and strive to clarify the reasoning behind differences in decision making.

Consistently seeking out new developments across the globe allows you to gain perspective and insights in the rich world of real estate. By educating yourself with new trends, reading source materials you can always keep your knowledge not only up to date but also provide your clients with more holistic information and understanding.
