VR has an extremely immersive effect and can be used to train people on new tasks. But the Scalator Ventures team used it also for training humans after a stroke with loss of memory or / and neural functions.

(Augmented Reality/Virtual Reality) Refers to computer-generated simulations that integrate the real world (AR) or are entirely self-contained (VR). -->AR is being used in gaming, product visualization, marketing campaigns, architecture and home design, education, and industrial manufacturing. -->VR improves retention, skill development, and risk-free practice across industries.

AR and VR share similarities in providing interactive experiences. However, they differ in immersion levels; VR offers a complete escape, whereas AR enhances reality. Combining AR and VR results in Mixed Reality (MR) and Extended Reality (XR). MR allows real and virtual elements to interact within a more engaged experience. XR encompasses all computer-altered realities, including AR, VR, and MR, representing the full spectrum of augmented, virtualized and mixed experiences. Meta’s metaverse concept and Apple’s spatial computing are closely linked to XR. The metaverse is a virtual space for user interaction within immersive digital environments. Apple’s spatial computing focuses on seamless and intuitive interactions with technology.

AR and VR are indeed innovative technologies that promise to revolutionize online commerce. The close visualization into a glass reach different regions in the brain, which are better for learning. The learning shows faster results. Unclear is still how the long-term memory is impacted. But the results at Scalator Ventures show that it depends on the method of visualization in the glass.

The tendency is showing up for us now that people would love mostly to "see", but not "read" or "listen". AR or VR are a really good way to personalise studying field. F.e. you'd get much more pleasure of see the Jurassic World in AR mode (nature, animals, and etc.), than watching the movies or videos you saw for many times before. New experience tend you gather knowledges much faster, than the old one. We recently helped one of our customer to launch the MVP of tourism app, where users, who didn't had a chance to visit places on another contents - may see the AR model of sightseeing into users' phone cameras (rotate / zoom in/out). An alternative to teacher-based differentiation is having a digital learning system that adapts to the preferences and abilities of the learners. An adaptive learning system is quicker in formatively assessing learners, more so now with advanced AI technologies (including LLMs and the neural networks that scaffold adaptive learning. Personalized Learning, conceptualized in 2006, involves e-Learning systems that integrate learning resources and social tools, catering to the learner's daily educational and entertainment needs including the use of social media becoming the daily norms for living, working, and learning.

Using VR/AR for adaptive learning is not an easy task, for technologies that are comparable to teacher presence are either based on complex algorithms or the developing field of AI to replicate the expected humanistic sensitivity. Intelligent systems via VR/AR is a new frontier in teaching and collating learners’ UX via VR/AR UI technology demands a matching, relating and inferring mechanism through learning object repository, and then generate learning content, context and information to adapt UI with learners UX. On Personalised Learning, not all studies advocate the suitability of social software for learning. One main concern of using personalised learning in VR/AR as an attractive option is that it is still rarely prescribed today.

Visualization: it is still totally new how to visualize best. The UX has to be totally different from mobile apps or games. Here the biggest challenge exists.

Additionally, ensuring accessibility and affordability of AR/VR devices for widespread use in educational settings is another challenge that needs to be addressed.

If given the autonomy to deliver curricula and courses… Language Learners embark on cultural immersion quests in VR, practicing language skills while engaging diverse cultures. Spatial, VRChat are just my two go-to apps. Science Learners dive into exploratory labs manipulating virtual ecosystems to architect ecology. Math Learners embark on adventures of solving puzzles and visualizing abstract concepts. History Learners experience ‘time-travel’ events and witnessing historical accounts through AR. I experienced a few, including via EngageXR. Art Learners build their own digital art gallery for sculpting, painting, and exhibiting art in VR. I am myself an avid digital artist using Gravity Sketch. 🎨

A great use of AR I have seen recently is learning piano using pass-through vision with the Meta Quest 3. Being able to self-teach piano in AR has huge potential to revolutionise music education and is significantly cheaper than hiring a private music tutor in the long run.

I am more than confident that the main benefit of using AR/VR for personalized and adaptive learning is gaining real-world, hands-on experience. For example, in medical education, students can use AR/VR to simulate surgical procedures and gain practical experience in a safe and controlled environment. This allows them to develop and refine their skills before working with real patients, ultimately enhancing their preparedness and confidence. No lectures will give such a result.

From my experience, integrating AR and VR into personalized and adaptive learning environments has immense potential, for example, AR/VR can facilitate group projects in a virtual space, allowing students to work together regardless of their physical location. Professional development programs are essential to ensure that teachers feel confident and competent in using AR/VR tools in their classrooms. These technologies can be applied not just in K-12 or higher education but also in adult education and corporate training, providing tailored experiences that adapt to the individual’s career needs and aspirations.

There are 5 pillars for developing VR experiences: 1. Fit for the medium Not everything is "fit" for the VR headset and don't assume every experience is. You're asking someone to strap a computer to their face. 2. Storytelling You have complete control of what that person sees and where they are. Think of VR experiences like plays or stories with scenes. 3. Presence This is what makes VR powerful. Think of the viewer's experience as if they are wearing someone's head. 4. Comfort No sudden movements. All transitions should be slow fades to get someone acquainted with the virtual environment. 5. Repetition VR is a trial ground for experiences. Make this a place for people to try new things and fail.

Based on my research (my own REVAMP Framework), the prerequisites of learning via VR/AR are not mainly only on enhancing Adaptive (A) and Personalised (P) Learning. For VR/AR technology, and any other emerging technology for education, the learning should not be passive but rather engaging (E). Learning should be virtual-ready (V) hence why VR/AR exemplifies the future digital/phygital world. Since the learner demographic are not homogeneous but a heterogenous demographic of learners individually unique in their learning dispositions, learning should cater for multimodal (M) content and experiences. The E, V, A, M, P are interconnected as the sum greater than its parts, ultimately making learning Realistic (R). The REVAMP Framework
