What I like to add is if it is strategically important to meet the deadline I will consider postponing other non strategically urgent projects or bringing in resources from other projects or if time permissive hire external resources for this project. Or transfer an internal staff to this project and hire external resources to help out on the projects they are transferred from.

The starting point is to pinpoint why the timeline is unrealistic. Does something on the critical path require time to get right? Do you need more time to gather data to make the right decision? Do you not have other organizational ducks in a row? This is much more effective than stating "I need more time" or "that's unrealistic". It allows you to explain why rushing will risk a bad outcome, and waste resources. Nobody wants fast and failed. At the same time, it's important to anticipate all the reasons they think you are moving too slowly. Do they think you are being conservative and not taking enough risk? Do they think you are not being forceful enough in pushing your team? Get ahead of these concerns by showing your work.
