Self-limited illnesses are healed by the body's immune system and can be treated at home without seeing a medical provider. This type of illness is often referred to as needing to "run its course". Even though these illnesses are self-limited, they can still be contagious and make you feel quite sick. Treatment for these illnesses include self-care for symptoms, limiting spread to others and understanding when to seek care from a medical provider.
Not feeling well? Use the steps and guides below to start feeling better. The JMU pharmacy is located on the first floor of the SSC and carries a variety of over-the-counter medications and health care products. The pharmacy team is available to answer your questions.
Outside of pharmacy hours, we have a number of Wellness Vending Machines on campus that have items to support your self care.
Step 1: Understand Your Health Condition and Symptoms
Choose the self-care guide that most clearly matches your symptoms and read it carefully.
Step 2: Choose the Correct Self-Care Measure
If over-the-counter medications are needed, use the FDA and UHC Pharmacy handouts.
Step 3: Limit Spread to Others
Complete a self-care note if needed:
1) Print a self-care note, then complete and sign the note.
2) Use the note to communicate your absence with instructors, supervisors or others. Class and employment attendance policies may still apply.
Step 4: Know When to Seek Help from a Medical Provider
Review the self-care guide for when to seek help from a medical provider.
