ITU’s 160th Anniversary

As we approach ITU’s 160th Anniversary in 2025, we invite you to join us in celebrating a remarkable journey that began in 1865. Established as the International Telegraph Union, ITU is the oldest specialized agency of the United Nations, with a legacy of pioneering global telecommunications. From the early days of the telegraph to the modern era of digital connectivity, ITU has been instrumental in shaping how the world communicates, advancing global standards, and bridging digital divides.

A milestone in global connectivity

In the past decade, digital technologies have rapidly moved to the forefront of the global agenda, transforming how we live, work, learn and connect. The 160th Anniversary is more than just a celebration of ITU’s rich history; it is a recognition of the pivotal role that innovation and multilateralism play in harnessing digital technologies to address global challenges and foster sustainable development.

Join us in the celebration

From 1 January to 31 December 2025, we will commemorate this significant milestone by reflecting on our shared journey, celebrating our achievements, and recommitting to our mission of creating a digital future for all.

We invite you to take an active role in our 160th Anniversary campaign through the following opportunities:

  • Celebrate innovation and multilateralism
Reflect on 160 years of technological advancement and cooperation, particularly in times of global challenges.
  • Showcase and co-create
Join ITU members, host countries, partners, citizens, and UN agencies in highlighting how technology has historically advanced social good and how critical it is to people’s daily lives. Mobilize collective efforts to bridge digital divides and accelerate progress toward the Sustainable Development Goals.
  • Promote gender equality in digital transformation
Empower girls and women by promoting access to technology, education, and leadership opportunities, aligning with the theme of World Telecommunication and Information Society Day 2025 on May 17 and marking Beijing+30.

Stay tuned to learn more about our anniversary campaign. Meanwhile, contact us at ITU160[@]itu.int for questions and suggestions and start promoting using #ITU160.

“Digital transformation is driving the global agenda, and for 160 years, ITU has been at the forefront. The best is yet to come — let’s open the doors to the future together!”
