- 65-week breaches rise by around 10 per cent to hit 56,000
- Overall waiting list rises by 30,000 to near record 7.6 million
- Four hours A&E performance improves despite record admissions
The number of 65-week elective waits has increased for consecutive months with the figure rising by more than ten per cent to around 56,000 in May, NHS England’s latest statistics show.
The data published today, the first official waiting time statistics under the new government, show the overall waiting list rose by around 31,000 to a near-record 7.6 million cases in May.
New health and social care secretary Wes Streeting has pledged to return the system to meet the 92 per cent 18-week referral to treatment target within five years, which experts estimate means cutting the list to around 3.5 million.
NHSE highlighted the continued demand pressure facing trusts. Data published last month showed accident and emergency in England reported their busiest ever month in May (around 2.4 million attendances).
And data published today showed this pressure continued with 2.29m A&E attendances reported in June and more than half a million admissions (536,884) – which NHSE said was the biggest figure for any June on record.
Despite the record June admissions, four-hour performance nudged up month-on-month, hitting 74.6 per cent (see below: Twenty trusts hit 78 per cent target).
Labour’s new long-term NHS plan is expected in the autumn. But NHSE’s immediate concern is to virtually eliminate the number of 65-week waiters by September – a target already pushed back from March.
While the NHS’s elective priorities are now under review, the 65-week target was set out in the 2024-25 planning guidance – and is an ambition trusts have been working towards for some time.
University Hospitals Sussex Foundation Trust reported the most 65-week breaches in May, both in absolute terms (5,245) and also when looked at as a proportion of the total list size (3.7 per cent).
Other trusts with long backlogs include Mid and South Essex FT (2,167); Norfolk and Norwich University Hospitals FT (1,977); East Kent University Hospitals FT (1,800); and Barts Health Trust (1,592) (full table below).
Publication of the statistics this morning followed the government announcing overnight it has commissioned former minister, surgeon and academic Lord Ara Darzi to carry out an independent review of NHS performance.
Twenty trusts hit 78 per cent A&E target
Performance against the four-hour A&E target for all patients rose from 74 per cent in May to 74.6 per cent in June.
Twenty trusts met NHSE’s target for 2024-25 for four hours of performance to reach 78 per cent in June (see full list below).
However, Mr Streeting has pledged that the system will return to hitting the 95 per cent threshold within five years – a pledge many senior leaders believe is not possible to meet.
Long waits in A&E have increased year-on-year. There were 129,662 12-hour waits in A&E from time of arrival in June (9.8 per cent of attendance), compared with 104,020 in the same month last year (7.7 per cent of attendance), although the latest month’s figure was down from the 146,203 recorded in May.
Meanwhile, key ambulance response times slipped last month – despite a fall in the number of incidents. Category 1 cases, which include the most serious life-threatening cases, were reached in an average of 8m 21s compared with 8m 16s in May.
Category 2 incidents, including suspected stroke and heart attacks, were reached in 34m 38s, compared with 32m 44s in May.
Both missed the NHS Constitution targets of 7m and 18m – and the category 2 performance was also outside NHSE’s target for the year of 30m.
The new government has said it wants to reach the constitutional targets by the end of the Parliament.
NHSE medical director Professor Sir Stephen Powis praised frontline teams for “continuing to work exceptionally hard under significant [demand] pressure”.
