Never one to take too long a breather between projects, burgeoning local restaurant mogul Charles Phan is now talking about yet another new restaurant, and this time the concept isn’t Asian at all. He and longtime cocktail wingman Erik Adkins, bar manager at Slanted Door, are plotting a New Orleans-themed restaurant with a boozy angle, as the Chron’s Inside Scoop reports today. The location: a relatively small, 1,300-square-foot space on Pier 3, next door to the Plant Café.
The bar will have a whiskey focus and a drink list inspired by the 1937 cocktail tome Famous New Orleans Drinks and How to Mix ‘Em by Stanley Arthur.
Phan’s restaurants Slanted Door, Heaven’s Dog, and Wo Hing General Store are all well anchored by strong bar programs with respected bartenders, and as Adkins says of the new, unnamed project, “We thought we’d do the kind of place we’d like to drink after work.”
Food-wise, we’re curious to see what may be in the works to set this apart from other recently opened, New Orleans-inspired restaurants like Boxing Room and Criolla Kitchen. Timing on the new restaurant is still TBA, and the design will be done by Olle Lundberg, with inspiration coming from a salvaged canoe from Lundberg’s personal collection.
As you’ll recall, Phan is also currently working on revamping the Moss Room at the Academy of Sciences, which he and his team just took over in January, with Slanted Door chef de cuisine Justine Kelly at the helm.
