Such are the standards people now expect from the brand related by blood to Rolex that when a new Tudor unexpectedly drops, it sends its collectors – of which there are many – into a frenzy of excitement. The latest: a GMT version of the Pelagos FXD. For starters, it’s light and lean at 42mm in diameter, 12.7mm thin and made of titanium. While the original Pelagos (a dive watch) was made in cahoots with the French Naval special forces, this one is designed with operations in air and on land in mind too – hence the GMT function. It can in fact keep track of the time in three different time zones at the same time (a separate jumping hour GMT hand being the third). 2/56Piaget Andy Warhol Clou de Paris
This year Piaget is like the horological equivalent of Shaboozey, all ‘Tipsy’ from a successful 2024. Indeed, few watchmakers have had a bigger year which is apt given its celebrating the big 1-5-0. Things got off to a golden start with the re-issuing of the legendary Polo 79 and have continued in the same rich vein of form – topped off by the news that the cushion-shaped watch Andy Warhol made famous (the Black Tie) has been given a glow up with a Clou de Paris guilloché motif case and also been officially renamed as the Piaget Andy Warhol. Most superheroes wear capes but not all have their sassy little faces on the crown of a watch. Deadpool does on this limited edition Fossil x Marvel piece, which we’re pretty sure Ryan Reynolds will be thrilled about, and likely purchasing as a prank for his wife Blake Lively. As cheeky as it looks, this watch crams in a decent amount of horology into it – namely an openworked-dial that gives a glimpse into the automatic movement and a bezel which offers a taste for what wearing a dive watch should feel like. We’ve said it before but if you’re a watch guy, whatever your collection looks like, there should be something Japanese in the mix. Seiko and Grand Seiko tend to hog the limelight so for something a bit more niche look at Orient. This new titanium Star M42 Diver – a limited edition 60th anniversary piece – shows you what it has to offer. Most people want their dive watch to feel sporty and simple, which is what this clean design delivers. But the charcoal-grey dial dials things up with those matte-gold accents. £1,229.99. What do you do to mark the significant anniversary (30 years) of the tragic passing of one of your most iconic ambassadors of all time? In TAG Heuer’s case in regard to Ayrton Senna, you drop a mad new watch that’s as complicated as it is in keeping with the brand’s love of all-things F1 related. There aren’t enough tourbillons in the world that feel 100 percent wearable for all occasions, so put simply, that’s what this Carrera Chrono Tourbillion x Senna achieves with aplomb. £33,050. The shimmering colour and ripple-like finish of the enamel dial on this special Biver Automatique alone is enough to remind everyone that JCB (Jean-Claude Biver) has still got what it takes to turn heads, seek out new innovations and mix it with the big brands. Dubbed as a return to the basics, this collection is a reminder that all you need to create something that tells the time is three hands and a movement to power it. World time watches always bring a sense of excitement to the party, just because by nature they are displaying the time in lots of exotic places around the world. Carl F Bucherer’s Heritage Worldtimer gives the category a sexy new pick me up. While the steel versions are a steal at £6,800-£7,200, a red gold 39mm number like this for £11,400 is also banging value. Fonts! Typography! These are perfectly legitimate design aspects to ogle over – in life generally and on watches more specifically. The latest Modul quartz piece from the Glasgow’s finest watchmaker displays some shapely numerals, indices and hands inside a distinctive tonneau shaped case. Prestige and heritage will always dictate what watches people desire – but more than ever bold design is the number one reason behind wristwear choices. It’s how young brands like Aera, Christopher Ward and Studio Underd0g are gaining recognition. British brand Aera only launched in 2022 but is already mixing it with the big boys thanks to its unique pieces and does what it says on the tin names (P-1 pilot’s watch, D-1 diver watch). Timex has spent 170 years making cool watches accessible to the masses – and hitting such a milestone, it’s continuing in the same rich vein. Dropping a £1 watch earlier this month, now Timex has unveiled a trendy new collab with MM6 Maison Margiela, using its classic 36mm T80 piece. An integrated bracelet never looked so fine, and simple. There’s also a ring version – because why not? It’s as cute as it is cutting edge. Doubling up with a wrist/finger stack is surely the only way forward. £180. At timex.co.uk
11/56Panerai Radiomir Perpetual Calendar GMT GoldtechTM
It sounds basic to say this but sometimes things just sound better in Italian. Case in point: Panerai’s new Radiomir ‘Calendario Perpetuo’ – compared to Perpetual Calendar, see what I mean? The Radiomir’s design is iconic enough in itself but for this new version it’s the movement that’s particularly noteworthy. For the first time, the crown is single handedly capable of changing the day, date, month and leap year. Convenient but also technically impressive from the in-house P.4100 movement that took five years to make. And the case! Patented as GoldTech, it’s platinum and copper and gives the look of red gold. 12/56Vacheron Constantin Patrimony x Ora ïto
Vacheron Constantin’s charm offence should come as no surprise to anyone – whether you’re a longtime collector or new watch fan courtesy of Brad Pitt’s recent VC embraces. In the chic stakes though, horology doesn’t get much chicer than Vacheron Constantin’s Patrimony. I’m aware there are a lot of superlatives flying around here but as the Patrimony’s dial hits 20 years, praise where praise is due. This limited yellow gold piece, designed by Ora ïto, is notable for how thin it is but such is the hypnotic effect those concentric circles have on that beguiling dial, you may not notice anything else. 13/56Ulysse Nardin Freak S x Watches of Switzerland
If you want to make a bit of noise about a big occasion, the colour purple is always a good place to start. Watches of Switzerland agrees as to mark 100 years influencing the watch world immeasurably (the luxury retailer has helped to get more watches on more people’s wrists), Ulysee Nardin has rustled up 10 celebratory Freak S 45mm beasts. Few watchmakers are more avant-garde in their designs these days than Ulysee Nardin, whose Freak model (no dial, no hands, no crown) has become something of a modern icon for younger watch brands to aspire to. The purple comes from a crystalium plate that sits beneath the movement and its new automatic winding system is called Grinder – make of that what you will. POA. At watches-of-switzerland.co.uk

With the news of McLaren’s sexy looking W1, we were quietly hoping it might present an opportunity for Richard Mille to dream up its fourth collaboration with the supercar manufacturer. Bingo, it has – though there’s nothing quiet about the watch or the car. Obviously the RM 65-01 is centred around Papaya orange but the baby blues and yellows on this split-second chronograph amp up the volume further still. But when you clock the W1-matching shape of the bezel, you’ll agree that’s what sets this piece apart from anything else in horological/automotive terms. POA. At richardmille.com

Hands up who has the padel bug? Tennis with less running and generally more sociable sounds like a win in our view. Watch wise, padel has been Certina’s favoured sport of choice for a while, with its love newly cemented with a trio of padel-inspired DS-7s. The pattern on the dial matches that of a padel net on this otherwise very ’70s looking 42mm steel sports watch. Available in three colours, our fave is the most classic – blue. 16/56Blancpain Air Command 42mm
While Brat green was the colour of the summer, autumn calls for a more demure green – like the colour of this new Blancpain Air Command. ‘Camouflage’ green as it’s keen to be known as, the watch comes in 36mm or 42mm with the latter narrowly our favourite for great legibility. In the grand scheme of Blancpain things, the Air Command represents young blood as the model has only been alive and kicking since 2019. Its Fifty Fathoms diver is always gonna be the brand’s go-to but this pilot’s watch is perhaps better suited to playing around with titanium. 17/56Audemars Piguet Royal Oak Concept Split-Seconds Chronograph GMT
Trust AP to add IRL kryptonite to one of its watches. Yes, there is lume in the forged carbon case of the new black and blue Royal Oak Concept 43mm – this is not a drill. The first watchmaker to ever play with the material back in 2007, AP and forged carbon have been on a hiatus for eight years, clearly plotting a madder than ever return to business as usual. And to further up the ante, its highly recognisable RO bezel is ceramic, as is the crown, caseback and chrono-pushers. The movement’s a banger, too. POA. At audermarspiguet.com

It’s highly likely people who bellow “surf’s up” out of a car window when driving past a blown-out beach have never ridden a wave in their lives. No shame in that. In the same vein, you don’t need to be a surfer to rock the latest G-Shock, which – in collaboration with surf brand WHR (Western Hydrodynamic Research) – as well as telling the time like any classic digi Casio, also boasts a tide graph to help surfers keep tabs on what the swell is saying. “I love watches, but find most of them boring. And the ones that are even vaguely fun can be eye wateringly expensive.” We don’t know much about Dorset-based Detrash watches but straightaway we’re digging founder Guy Blaskey’s raison d’etre for setting up the British brand. As you might have guessed from the name, these watches are made from recycled materials (“We want to make trash Desirable” another M.O we rate). The Player One is cheeky and cheap, especially when you consider it has a Seiko NH35 automatic movement inside. And the cheek continues on the caseback. £380. At detrash.com
20/56Breguet Type XX Chronograph 2067
They say beauty is in the eye of the beholder etc etc, but come on – is anyone seriously not feeling this new rose gold Type XX from Breguet? You could hang it in the Musee d'Orsay in Paris and it wouldn’t look out of place next to contemporary pieces or among late 1770s Romanticism classics given that’s where the brand originates from. Without feeling busy or cramped, the dial fits so much functional goodness on it and I’m a huge fan of the font of the numerals on the bezel. The use of rose gold sparingly is also quietly perfect. £35,500. At breguet.com

Good news! In order to legitimately own a dive watch, you don’t have to ever go near an oxygen cylinder, or wear flippers and a snorkel – though they are great for silly selfies. Dive watches, like this new vintage-looking Longines Legend Diver, are obviously appropriately crafted to withstand the forces encountered deep in the ocean. But going below sea level is by no means a prerequisite to rocking one. To celebrate 65 years of Legend Divers, Longines – big on pilot watches too (same rule applies) – has released three new colours. 22/56Seiko Presage Craftsmanship Urushi GMT
Question for the audience: can a watch collection be complete without a Seiko in it? There’s no wrong or right answers, and sure, many might think such a statement sounds controversial but the watch world has a lot to thank the Japan mega brand for. I won’t bore anyone by talking about the quartz crisis but Seiko made things happen in the watch world like few other brands ever have. Not all its ranges are everyone’s cup of matcha tea but the Presage is classic and uncomplicated – and for this piece rarely will you see a cleaner GMT. Any watch that has the word extreme in its name feels like it needs to be worn with a few exclamation marks. Without even seeing it, you know it’s not going to be a wallflower. Having successfully reinvented the Carrera Chronograph to feel more classic, this new piece is a welcome upping of the ante – and a reminder of TAG’s motorsport creds. Titanium and ceramic make it bold and brash, and that skeleton dial demands your complete attention. All that for £7,150, it feels like a bit of a steal. tagheuer.com

Grand Seiko and Seiko grab Japan’s horological headlines most of the time but the more savvy watch enthusiasts will know Orient is well worth having on your radar. From skeleton dials at entry-level prices to its very understated Bambino dress watches, Orient has a knack for creating simple watches that exude a bit of edge to them. 25/56Audemars Piguet Code 11.59 Selfwinding Flying Tourbillon Chronograph
Can we all agree that any initial doubts over whether the Code 11.59 would go on to be anything other than a success were misplaced. The Royal Oak will forever be APs icon, but there is plenty of room for the more contemporary design and shape of the Code 11.59 to thrive. The mere prospect of having a watch that’s made of both white gold (bezel) and black ceramic (case and crown) is kinda sexy in itself. Remember when people used to comment ‘first like’ on Instagram posts? Well, here’s a first I like – the first ever ceramic Piaget, and a Polo Skeleton no less. What's not to like? Year in year out, watchmakers and R&D teams all over Switzerland must spend a lot of time racking their brains to settle on something new and innovative to release. Piaget Polos are classy icons and the skeleton ones do a great job of relaying the brand’s technical chops, so having a ceramic version (that's 7.5mm slim) is really just Piaget showing off a little. 28/56Vacheron Constantin Fiftysix Self-winding
The perfect pink gold watch with black dial didn’t exist until Vacheron Constantin dropped this Fiftysix 40mm beaut. It’s been a minute since Vacheron played with the Fiftysix collection (which only launched in 2018 despite its very ’50s vibe) but it was worth the wait. Looks aside, the fact it’s one of the first pieces to feature a self-winding movement only adds to its credentials. And can we just take a minute to appreciate how streamlined those lugs are, please? 29/56Jaeger-LeCoultre Reverso Monet Tribute
What is it they say about blank canvases? The clever thing about JLC’s Reverso is that while one side has to tell the time (watch rule 101), the flip side – initially conceived to protect the glass from being smashed by polo balls – is available to be decorated however watchmakers see fit. There will always be something quite pure about blank Reversos but equally if Claude Monet is your favourite impressionist painter then you’ll probably jump at the chance you own these enamel ones. 30/56Tissot PRX UFO Robot Grendizer
Much like Cole Palmer on the football pitch, Tissot can do no wrong with its gift that keeps on giving – the PRX. Ever since the original 1978 was relaunched in 2021, its integrated steel bracelet and ‘70s shape and design has been morphing non-watch people into mega watch fans. The latest iteration continues in the same affordable vein, this time playing with Japanese anime giant UFO Robot Grendizer. The collab really comes to life in the dark as the dark blue dial lights up to show a silhouette of the popular anime character. By moving the Tissot branding to 6 o’clock, it sits neatly across Grendizer’s chest. No doubt played for, and very cool – as we’ve come to expect from Tissot and its PRXs. £785. At tissotwatches.com
31/56Longines Spirit Zulu Time Titanium
For all its aviation history, in 2022 Longines decided to add brand new firepower to its pilot watches offering in the form of the Spirit Zulu Time. It was an instant hit with Gen Z types looking to satiate their inner flyboy without having to spend north of £3k. Such is its success, the Spirit Zulu Time now comes in titanium – lighter yet more robust is the vibe Longines is going for with this one. The colouring are classic, the bezel has a dashing ceramic finish and the arabic numerals sit nicely on that metallic Anthracite dial. £3,900. At longines.com
32/56Tiffany and Co Bird on a Flying Tourbillon
Having witnessed the likes of Louis Vuitton, Gucci, Dior and Chanel up the ante in the watchmaking games – some more on a grander scale than others – it’s about time Tiffany and Co made its next move in the space. And a tourbillon featuring an iconic take on Jean Schlumberger's Bird on a Rock is exactly the kind of power move the watch world has been waiting for. Tiffany’s first ever flying tourbillon is a stunner: second-to-none jewellery-making skills are coupled with watch-craftery we know the brand has in its locker. The watch doesn’t tick, it dances. 33/56Piaget Polo Date Rainbow
It’s hard not to smile when you see a rainbow in the sky, and the same applies if you spot rainbow watches out in the wild. Both are rare sightings, though spotting one of the latter is becoming less of a rarity as more brands keep dropping watches with colours of the rainbow on the dial or bezel. This Polo Date 36mm is a stellar example of how brands can tastefully pimp up its most sought after piece – as Rolex has with its Daytona, AP with its RO and Hublot with its Spirit of Big Bang. Hard to find anyone who hasn’t been thoroughly entertained by SpongeBob at some point in the past 25 years. The watchmakers at Spinnaker clearly have a soft spot for the iconic yellow sea sponge as the brand has unveiled a special collection of its Hass model as a tribute to him and his mates. We love a pink dial at the best of times so the ‘Patrick Pink’ version is our fave of the four. 35/56Blancpain Fifty Fathoms Bathyscaphe Complete Calendar Ceramic
When it comes to ceramic watches, often the fact it’s five times harder than stainless steel is what grabs the headlines – but as if anyone actually needs to be wearing a watch that tough? For me, the material’s aesthetic potential is what cuts ceramic above the rest. Case in point, the polished finish on this new black Blancpain Bathyscaphe is what we should be talking about. Combine the fact it has a complete calendar moonphase inside and it’s fair to call this one of the most advanced Bathyscaphe pieces of watchcraft in Blancpain’s long, celebrated history. “My sugarboo, I'm levitating, The Milky Way, we're renegading” may be a famous Dua Lipa line she belted out in front of 100,000 Glasto ravers over the weekend. But in a parallel, watch obsessed world, it could also be this rose gold 41mm Vanguart Orb piece, the avant-garde watchmaker’s latest mad creation, sounding out its general feelings as the flying tourbillon inside this extraordinary watch levitates like few other mechanical watches ever have before. It’s not a stretch to say it’ll make normal non-watch people want to renegade on their usual pastimes in favour of gazing at this watch. Bell & Ross’s BR-03 has long been my favourite example of how in horology, square pegs can fit in round holes. Kinda, as this square watch rocks a circular dial inside. It’s especially killer because the bezel is fully functioning to add dive watch cred. The French brand is forever coming up with dynamic new iterations of its bestseller and this pale blue full lume dial lights up the imagination more than most. Don’t let that hide the subtle Rolex-esque incremental changes – the font is slightly different, hands are redesigned, indices are a bit bigger. £4,700. At bellross.com
38/56Girard-Perregaux x Saint Laurent Casquette 2.0 Titanium
One of the kookiest watches ever made gets the 2.0 version it so deserves as Girard-Perregaux has clearly convinced fashion powerhouse Saint Laurent the Casquette 2.0 watch the two collaborated on hits the killer-creations-we-need-more-of spot. While last year’s version was the watch the OG Matrix cried out for, this silver-coloured 2024 one is sleeker as it’s made of titanium, which somehow makes the sexy LED display even more legible. 39/56Omega Seamaster Aqua Terra Black Dial 38mm
The perfect everyday/dress/tool watch doesn’t exist… wait, hello new black-dialled Omega Seamaster Aqua Terra in 34mm, 38mm and 41mm options. Omega has spent the past 48 months or so dropping Aqua Terra pieces in different pastels and bolder colours but there’s something about a black dial that just cleanses the palette. No model is more popular right now in terms of actual sales than the Seamaster, according to our latest research. And looking at this beauty – in sizes that suit all wrists – is easy to see why. When you are one of a dozen brands given the go ahead by the British military to make timepieces for troops in the World Wars, and were responsible for delivering roughly 2000 watches to soldiers before the infamous Normandy landings on D-Day, then it totally makes sense to unveil a new watch to commemorate 80 years passing since that fateful day. This is exactly what Vertex decided to do, with its M36 – the M a reference to how things are named in the military, and the 36 reflective of the case size. It’s a charming tool watch with plenty of history, and with three strap options (a dark brown vintage-style leather, a woven cotton one and a steel bracelet) you can mix it up as you please. £2,150. 41/56TAG Heuer Aquaracer Professional 300 GMT
Everyone’s been going crazy for green watches in 2024 but this TAG Heuer Aquaracer GMT might just be the freshest yet. One of a bevy of new Aquaracers unveiled this week, it's my favourite one by far – not least because it’s giving major Rolex GMT Sprite vibes too. Unlike Rollies though, it’s actually going to be possible to get hold of one. £3,650 isn’t bad for a 42mm automatic dive watch with GMT function, which is what the 24-hour markers around the bezel are for, meaning you can clock what time it is in more than one place in the world – at the same time. 42/56Richard Mille RM 27-05 Flying Tourbillon Rafael Nadal
This Richard Mille is basically Rafa Nadal in flying tourbillon form (kind of). Weighing in at just 11.5g – a record for the brand – it's the latest, maybe last? collab between RM and Rafa. Together, since 2010, they have been on a mission to make the lightest possible timepiece that you can still wear while playing tennis at the highest level. They’ve achieved it multiple times as they continue to set the bar for ultra light sports watches – we’re talking ultra ultra here – so it was a really nice touch to see Nadal debut this watch as he bid farewell to his beloved Roland Garros where he won 14 French Open titles. Just shy of a million pounds, this new edition to the legendary RM 27 Series proves how cutting edge Richard Mille watches are. POA. At richardmille.com

Some watches are harder to get hold of than others, but for MB&F it’s not just because there are only limited quantities made. There are watches with a good story behind them, then there’s William Wood’s spectacular ode to a moment in British history like few others. The Miracle of Dunkirk during WWII only happened thanks to bravery shown from heroes like the Massey Shaw Boat. Now called the London Fire Brigade Fire Boat, they were responsible for saving more than 600 people from the beaches of Dunkirk in 1940. William Wood has decided to use its strong affiliation with the Fire Services to create a piece of history. This Dunkirk is inspired by a telegraph found in the Massey Shaw vessel with ‘half speed’ at 3 o’clock and ‘full speed’ at 9 o’clock. It has a bronze case with red engine rooms pipes wrapped either side of it as well as a genuine piece of the original boat engine on show in the caseback. For JLC, the Polaris collection hits a more everyday-wearable vibe that can’t quite be said for the legendary Reverso. Eager to continue to elevate the Polaris – its sportiest model – the Swiss masters of refined watchmaking have gone dual time in quite a big way. A cute second-time zone display is subtly integrated into a busy dial at 6 o’clock. It’s set by the crown at 10 o’clock and displays the choice of city you’re in below. Let this be a reminder that Ulysse Nardin doesn’t just do mad watches like the Freak and the Blast – it can do great-looking, high functioning automatic steel sports watches too. This Diver Net Ops 44mm is made of 95% recycled and it’s the camo-like bezel which particularly draws our eye. With the ‘X’ embossed, khaki green dial, it feels only right to put this through a few assault courses to see how it fares. Naming a watch brand that hasn’t released a green-dialled watch in 2024 might take you a while – but few are as bedazzling as Girard-Perregaux’s latest 42mm Laureato. In 2000, Elizabeth Hurley and Brendan Fraser did some pretty impressive reputational damage on anything ‘bedazzlement’ related, but the true meaning of the word is restored when you see the pink gold case/sage green dial combo on the fresh new Laureato. The Ultramarine Blue version is pretty dashing, too. When it comes to buying your first proper watch, for value, bragging rights, quality and a prestige name you can’t really beat Seiko – with this sporty new Prospex kinda proving my point. As well as boasting a decent amount of technical features (how good are these subdials and lumed up indices) and nods to the Japanese brand’s watchmaking and racing history, on a steel bracelet it also carries some serious weight. At 41mm with a black dial, it feels more stealth than previous Prospex Speedtimers – and it’s also solar power, which, depending on how green you are, could be a deciding factor. £620. It’s nearly been a month since Watches and Wonders and the watches that still have us wondering most are… these new Tangente Date 38mm special editions that bring a lot of colour and life to Nomos Glashütte’s 175th anniversary celebrations. With 31 versions, all brand new colourways, they certainly grabbed the attention of the watch world – not least because we are so used to seeing this cleanest of clean dialled watches in very simple (white or blue), very clear versions only. Translated literally as deep sea grey, this particular one is more moody than the others and is adjudged to conjure up visions of giant squid and dragon fish lurking at the bottom of the ocean. Frenchies Herbelin created some lovely new Newport pieces to mark the model’s 35th anniversary last year and it’s backing those up with this special panda dial version. Paul Newman and his Rolex Daytona made a name for the horological panda, so that now there are plenty of them out in the wild. Vulcain’s claim to watch spotting fame is the fact Joe Biden is a fan of its Cricket model. Though he was clocked wearing one a while ago (in 2011), it’s amazing how these things stick. The Cricket – perhaps as a consequence? – got a revamp a few years ago and now its vintage-looking diver (the Skindiver Nautique) is having its moment in the sun with five new colours. When you are the first to do something, the pressure is always on to continue doing that thing well. Rado and IWC were the #first watchmakers to experiment with ceramic watches in 1986 – and nearly 40 years on it’s fair to say Rado has kicked on more than IWC with ceramic pieces. The latest True Square Open Hearts are testament to this, with this white ceramic open-worked dial with rainbow gems sets quite the spectacle. £2,950. At rado.com

Not to sound like a broken record but when we predicted green dials would be a major trend for 2024 we didn’t expect there to be this many. The IYKYK watch crew know the Doxa SUB 200 is lowkey one of the most legit dive watches out there ever since they showed up in 1967 – with orange, turquoise and yellow dials to choose from. Now, add green to the reckoning, a lovely sea emerald type. Doxa has listened to the call for smaller watches and duly dropped a 39mm diver, which is certainly at the slighter end of the spectrum for ocean-exploring wristwear. ‘Pretty fly for a white guy’ is one of those Offspring lyrics most millennials probably care not to admit to singing along to whenever that song comes on the radio. Embarrassingly, it’s the first thing I thought of when I saw AVI-8’s latest military pilot watch – the Flyboy Airmaster. From the unique sector dial at 6 o’clock to the circular and horizontal lines on the red/blue dial and yellow stitching on the strap, there’s no shortage of colours, textures and design features going on.
