Chapter 1: Wanderlust
The early morning sunlight streamed through the narrow streets of Florence, casting a golden hue on the centuries-old buildings. Emma Davenport stood on the Ponte Vecchio, the ancient bridge that spanned the Arno River, absorbing the beauty of the city. She had been in Italy for three days, yet the sight of Florence still took her breath away every time. The city had a way of doing that—charming you, luring you into its rhythm, making you forget the rest of the world existed.
Emma pulled out her notebook, the one she carried with her on every trip. It was worn, the pages filled with scribbled notes and sketches from cities across the globe—Paris, Tokyo, Marrakech. She’d spent the last seven years writing travel articles for The Explorer’s Gazette, a prestigious magazine that allowed her to do what she loved most: travel. Her career had taken her to the farthest corners of the earth, but despite all the exotic destinations, she often felt as though she was searching for something she couldn’t quite put her finger on.
As she jotted down a few lines about the morning light over the Arno, her thoughts drifted to her life back in London. Or rather, the life she didn’t have there. Emma had an apartment in Notting Hill, a quaint little place she rarely saw. Her friendships had dwindled to occasional text messages and once-a-year catch-ups. Relationships? Nonexistent. There simply wasn’t time for a serious relationship when you were living out of a suitcase. But lately, she had started to wonder if she was missing out on something more. She loved her work, loved the freedom it gave her, but there were moments, like now, standing alone on this bridge, when the loneliness crept in.
Shaking off the thought, Emma closed her notebook and tucked it into her bag. She had a full day ahead of her—museums to visit, hidden cafés to discover, and of course, a few secret spots to uncover for her article. But first, she needed coffee.
The narrow alleyways of Florence were just beginning to wake up, the smell of freshly baked bread and espresso wafting through the air. Emma wandered aimlessly, letting the city guide her, until she stumbled upon a small, unassuming café tucked away on a quiet street. It was the kind of place only the locals knew about, and that’s exactly what drew her in.
Inside, the café was warm and inviting, with just a handful of tables and a counter lined with pastries. Behind the counter, a tall, dark-haired man with striking features was busy preparing espresso. His sleeves were rolled up, revealing strong forearms dusted with flour. Emma found herself momentarily distracted by his effortless charm as he worked.
Buongiorno,
he greeted her with a smile as she approached the counter. His voice was deep, rich, with that melodic Italian accent that could make even the most mundane words sound like poetry.
Buongiorno,
Emma replied, her Italian limited but passable. Un cappuccino, per favore.
Subito,
he said, quickly getting to work on her order. As he prepared the cappuccino, Emma took a seat by the window, her eyes wandering over the simple yet cozy décor. The café was a far cry from the trendy spots she was used to in London, but there was something about it that felt comforting, like she had discovered a hidden gem.
A few minutes later, the man appeared at her table, placing the cappuccino in front of her. Here you go,
he said, switching to English with ease. Enjoy.
Grazie,
Emma said, smiling up at him. As he turned to leave, she noticed his apron had the name Marco
embroidered on it. A typical name for an Italian, but it suited him.
Emma took a sip of her cappuccino, savoring the rich, smooth taste. It was perfect,
