INTRODUCTION TO LEADERSHIP
What is leadership?
T
his chapter gives an overview of leadership and its role in creating an amazing work culture. We will define leadership and its significance, mention the importance of work culture in modern organizations and then discuss how leadership can enhance work culture. In other words, how can you bring real change to your organization? We want you to become a better leader so you can bring change to your team and organization!
First, we need to ask what leadership is? Leadership is a vision, yes, a vision that provides a clear and inspiring picture of a better future, leaders are visionaries. What is a vision? We can define a vision as a mental image of a desired outcome, leaders have the power to envision an image of what should be in the future. The leader believes that the team can achieve this future vision, it is a destination, and the leader guides them.
Consider that a leader’s vision is never a static concept, it is dynamic and adaptable. It evolves as circumstances change, and circumstances ALWAYS change. The vision is always being refined, otherwise the vision will become non relevant and not achievable. A leader’s vision is not enough, it requires skills, dedication, and the ability to communicate effectively. Leaders must share this vision with passion and clarity, so that others can believe in the same future. It is not about manipulation; it is about inspiring people to come together.
So far, I have stated that a leader is a visionary, with the ability to imagine a better future and with the skills to share this vision with the rest of the team. Communication is key, the vision can be great, but if the communication is poor, the team will not believe in such vision. If the team follows the leader believing in the vision, everything is possible!
What is the most important asset of an organization? Machines, automation, Artificial Intelligence? NO, it is the employees, the team doing the work, without them a company comes to a halt. A good leader recognizes that the team members are not just resources, they are unique individuals with talents and potential. As a leader YOUR JOB is to nurture their growth and development, what this means is that the leader should provide opportunities for learning and career advancement. Your team will become loyal if they know you look out for their wellbeing.
Leaders can emerge from any occupation, and they are not limited to hierarchical positions. Leadership transcends titles and positions, as it is fundamentally about actions and behaviors rather than formal authority. This is a critical point to grasp because it highlights that anyone, regardless of their role, can become a leader and make a positive impact on their surroundings. You do not need a degree or be a Director of Operations, COO, CEO, to be a leader, this means YOU can be a leader without an upper management position! The question is how? We will talk more about his on the next chapters in more detail, but here is how:
