    About the Author

    Introduction

The objective of this manual is to assist the home gardener and small farmer in the design of his greenhouse. Many of the subjects discussed in this book are more difficult to change after the physical structure is already built, i.e., orientation, accessibility, type of foundation, etc.

The manual provides practical information for gardeners and farmers, especially new comers to the industry. Improperly designed greenhouses won’t provide you with the conditions you need to get a premium crop. With close to fifty years of agricultural experience, I am sure this information will be helpful.

    Selecting Location

Selecting an appropriate location for your greenhouse is crucial.

    1 Light Requirements:

Plants require light for photosynthesis. One must determine how much sunlight will reach your plants in the proposed greenhouse site. Low light intensities reduce photosynthesis and causes slow growth along with the abortion of fruit and flowers. This results in low yield and minimal economic return on your investment. A greenhouse’s location, along with the time of year, can significantly alter photosynthetic rates of your plants. Locations with low winter solar radiation will require supplemental lighting.

Numerous companies sell hundreds of versions of grow lights. The correct lighting system depends on the crop you are growing and your budget. LEDs produce less heat and normally are less expensive to operate.
