FOREWORD
HERE WE HAVE one of the most important collections of drums kits in the world—truly one of a kind.
This collection of drum sets tells the complete story of rock drumming. The equipment that is seen in this book shows the start of many groundbreaking trends that have gone on to influence both manufactures and drummers alike.
It’s the first time equipment of this caliber has been documented so carefully and all in one book. This is a must-have book for those wanting to understand the progression of the drum set, changes in drum styles and configurations throughout the years, and most importantly, the different materials used to make these drums—from stainless steel to aluminum and exotic woods, to various high-end plastics—all of which still shapes the way drum sets are made today!
It’s all here in the book, along with some of the unbelievable creativity that has been used over the years to decorate these drums and make them each unique in their own right.
Someone had to put this collection together and David has done just that. For all of the drummers around the world, it’s incredible to have this drum set history presented in one book for the whole world to see.
Sit back and enjoy!
—Carl Palmer
INTRODUCTION
LET’S FACE IT: IF IT WEREN’T FOR DRUMS, WE’D ALL BE LISTENING TO CHAMBER MUSIC. Drums are the heartbeat of rock, pop, R & B, country—you name it—which is why people tend to be fascinated with them. And yet the average person has never had the chance to closely examine a drum set. This book aims to change that.
The drum set is the most personal of all instruments because it’s the only one that is literally built around the person playing it—both physically and stylistically. As a result, no two drum kits are exactly alike. That’s why drummers are always interested in learning about the different kinds of setups other drummers are using. For those folks, Crash offers a treasure trove of photos and information, not just about any other drum kits, but also about dozens of unique and historically significant sets, as well as the famous drummers who played them.
WHAT IS A DRUM SET?
In order to better appreciate the material offered in this book, nondrummers might benefit from a little explanation of what a drum set actually is. So, a drum set (or drum kit) consists of various types and sizes of drums assembled together to be played by one person. A basic kit usually includes a bass drum, snare drum, rack tom, floor tom, set of hi-hat cymbals, and ride cymbal, as well as one or more crash cymbals.
The bass drum is the largest and lowest-pitched drum on the kit. It’s often referred to as the kick
drum because it’s played with the foot. In most musical styles, the bass drum lays down the fundamental beat of a song. The snare drum is a shallow drum fitted with wires, or snares,
stretched across its bottom head. It produces a high, crisp sound that cuts through the music for backbeats and syncopated rhythm patterns.
Rack toms are usually positioned above the bass drum. Depending on their sizes, they produce high- to moderately low-pitched sounds. Floor toms are larger than rack toms and produce a lower-pitched sound. They generally have their own legs, but they’re sometimes suspended on stands.
A hi-hat is a device that closes two cymbals together when a pedal is depressed, then opens them again when the pedal is released. Hi-hat cymbals are played by hand with sticks to create rhythm patterns, as well as by foot: the chick sound made when the cymbals are closed with the foot helps establish a backbeat.
A ride cymbal is generally a large-diameter cymbal that’s played with the tip of a stick to help establish the tempo and feel of a song. Crash cymbals are smaller and thinner than ride cymbals and do just what their name implies. They crash
when struck, adding emphasis at certain points in the music.
DIFFERENCES AND SIMILARITIES
The drum sets shown in this book vary dramatically in size and configuration. Some are relatively small and simple, like those used by jazz greats including Buddy Rich and Joe Morello. But simple kits also made rock history. Just look at the Hello Goodbye
kit used by legendary Beatles drummer Ringo Starr or the studio kit played by Mitch Mitchell when he first joined the Jimi Hendrix Experience.
Of course, the collection also includes kits that can only be described as outsized and outrageous. These include the famous stainless-steel kit that Carl Palmer used with ELP, the iconic Destroyer Tour kit played by original KISS drummer Peter Criss, the unimaginably complex R30 kit played by Rush’s Neil Peart, and the virtually indescribable Siamese Monster
that Mike Portnoy used with Dream Theater.
No matter what they look like, all the drum sets included here have one thing in common: They served the needs of the drummer that played them. Those needs might have been exclusively musical, or they might have also involved the visual aspect of that drummer’s performance. Either way, this remarkable collection brings over sixty years of drumming history to life. Page after page, learn about rock ’n’ roll’s greatest drummers and what made them truly ROCK.
Sporting some serious rock fashion at an outdoor show in the mid-’80s.
CARMINE APPICE

Slingerland 1970 Leopard Kit
IN 1999, MODERN DRUMMER senior editor Rick Van Horn wrote: Carmine Appice set the foundation for heavy drumming… before John Bonham, before Ian Paice, before anyone else.
Carmine made his name with the protopsychedelic ’60s power-pop group Vanilla Fudge (who toured with Jimi Hendrix and Cream, and for whom Led Zeppelin opened many times). He went from there to playing hard-driving blues-rock with Cactus and with Beck, Bogert & Appice. In the late ’70s he toured and recorded with Rod Stewart, cowriting Stewart’s monster hit Do Ya Think I’m Sexy.

Carmine has been rocking for more than fifty years, and he’s still going strong.
Carmine was especially busy in the 1980s. Early in the decade he toured with Ozzy Osbourne and Ted Nugent. A few years later he formed King Kobra, with whom
