DIY Survival Hacks - Michael Hansen
Introduction
There's nothing more valuable than a well-prepared plan. Whether you're planning a project at your job, putting together a family budget, or preparing for a vacation, a good plan all but removes the possibility of failure. People plan for many things, but they often forget what I consider to be the most important plan of all—what to do when things go south.
It seems obvious that people should always be prepared for the worst. As a nation, we've seen many times over that when disaster strikes, people are largely left to fend for themselves. Sometimes, it's a simple case of either inadequate governmental aid or bureaucratic processes keeping aid from going where it's needed. In any case, you need to be prepared.
The best and most cited example of this is the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina in New Orleans and along the southern coast in general. In the hardest hit areas, people were abandoned, and many turned to looting and stealing because they had no resource security. They were left without food or clean water because aid did not arrive quickly enough. Many in the poorest areas were entirely looked over until the worst of it had passed.
Don't let what happened to them happen to you. You don't have to live in a particularly disaster-prone area to prepare. Whether it's earthquakes on the east coast, blizzards in the northeast, hurricanes in the south, or drought in the southwest, every area is susceptible to the whims of nature.
Natural disasters aren't the only cause for concern, though.
