INTRODUCTION
Your career begins today.
That's EdgeWise.PH's tagline, and we want college students to embrace it. Don't be afraid of it. We at the EWPH editorial team have been working at various jobs over the years, and we all learned many things right then and there. It was fun, and the experience was worth it, but I personally think that if I could go back in time and talk to my college self, I'd try to do things differently.
For one, I would have told myself to be more active in school projects. College is a great environment for discovering a career path because of so many opportunities available to students. I could have been a project manager, an athlete, an artist or a scientist. I could have spent my summers on internships with exciting companies. I could have learned more foreign languages, been an exchange student to another country. These are activities that other students discovered, but I never tried.
None of us can go back in time, but we at EWPH can do the next best thing: go to college students and tell them -- tell you -- what exciting options are in store for you. You may end up deciding to work in Manila, or the provinces, or abroad, or maybe study again or start your own business... whatever you choose, college is where you can start collecting skills to help you become successful.
Through our website www.edgewise.ph, we've published the advice we wish we got early on, and will continue to because we still have more to share. This volume compiles EWPH articles from its launch to the summer of 2010. During this period we focused more on technology and a Philippine audience, but eventually discovered that our readers were from all over the world. This international ebook edition retains the advice given to Filipino college students, but we hope that the basic wisdom will work for students beyond borders.

This is the kind of advice that students aiming for career advancement must take to heart. And it comes from the most powerful person on the planet.
Almost all young people today have accounts on social networking sites such as Facebook, Twitter and MySpace. They also maintain blogs that chronicle their daily activities and, sometimes, become a venue for some very intense venting. While we recognize that what people do in their free time is their business, most hiring managers and recruiters think that what you do outside of the office is a reflection of what kind of employee you will be.
Nowadays, companies are able to use information (from social networking sites) to check the background of a job candidate,
