      Dear Sciatics, we are a solemn brotherhood. We walk among you with an invisible ailment, unless you walk with a cane (more on that later). There are no bandages, no cast. Nothing reveals your situation, except for an overall expression of a lack of joy, suffering facial grimaces and a constant dread of coughing, sneezing and worst of all: SITTING!

      Most people are not familiar with the Sciatic nerve. Never heard of it. Here and there, the term ‘slipped disc’ is known — but not the repercussions.

      I don’t want to sound boastful, but I am not a squeamish person. During my military service, I took it all in stride when wounded during a training exercise, developing an acute case of gangrene having almost lost a leg, I suffered in relative silence.

      From age 20 - 47 (when my sciatica started), I used my national health card only once, when I caught pneumonia at the age of 33. As a matter of fact, when this whole sciatica business began in 2005, I had to get a new health card since my current one was no longer valid. The receptionists had a field day laughing at this pre-historic card.
