About the Author
Introduction
Magick, in the writings of British occultist Aleister Crowley, was defined as, the Science and Art of causing Change to occur in conformity with Will.
The spelling magick for magic is taken from Early Modern English, and was chosen by Crowley to differentiate his concept from other practices, such as stage magic or prestidigitation. Crowley saw magick as the essential method for a person to reach true understanding of the self and to act according to one's True Will. Since the time of Crowley's writing about magick, many different spiritual and occult traditions have adopted the k
spelling for the word magic.
Magick is a difficult concept to define. Refusing to be confined within the tenants of any single belief system, it exists in many forms throughout the world and encompasses practices ranging from simple superstition to highly organized ritual. More than anything, magick is the harnessing and focusing of energy. It comes from abilities, which we all possess, that can be used to create, manifest, protect, heal, and to live a magickal life. While many assume that magick is the sole dominion of witches and shamans, magick is actually a phenomenon that occurs naturally and has an important place in our everyday lives.
Most magick incorporates a blending of ideas from many different magical and religious systems. Prayer may be considered the ultimate form of magick in that it is thought or desire focused upon a specific goal. Indeed, we all use magick in one form or another everyday. The businessman who wears a special power shirt
on the day of an important meeting is practicing a type of folk magick. The small rituals that most of us employ throughout our lives are attempts to tap in to the positive forces active in the world around us--to influence the outcome of daily events by the manipulation of unseen energies.
My first experience with prayer as a form of magick came as little girl watching my mother perform the ritual of lighting Friday night Sabbath candles. First she covered her head with a scarf and lit the candles with a match. Then she spread her hands over and around the flames in a circular motion, three times, drawing their light and warmth toward her. Lastly, she covered her eyes with her hands and spoke the traditional blessing aloud; following with a whispered prayer for the health and sustenance of our family. My family wasn’t especially religious, but even as a child I could sense a change in the vibrations in the room after the lighting of the candles; a change from ordinary time to the sanctified aura of the Sabbath.
Another childhood example of simple magick is the ritual of blowing out of the candles on a birthday cake. The birthday child is told to make a silent wish while blowing out the candles on the cake. If he or she is able to blow out all candles in one breath it signified that the wish would come true. However, the birthday wish has to be kept secret; because if you reveal it to anyone it won’t come true. Some scholars believe that the custom of placing candles on a cake was started by the early Greeks, who put candles on the cakes that they offered to the Moon goddess, Artemis, in the belief that the lit candles made the round shaped cakes glow like the moon.
The type of magick addressed in this book is based on the use and control of the natural energies and powers that are in all of us to effect needed change. I believe that to a great extent we create the lives we live. We do this by tapping into the power with which we are born. When we cast a spell, we shift energy by consciously focusing on our desires and intentions. We do this by concentrating our deepest beliefs and passions on the intended outcome. While it may sound like hocus-pocus, there is nothing supernatural about it because real magick comes from within. Magick with a k
has been practiced by women and men throughout time, and with an open mind and a true desire to effect positive change, you too can learn how to create the things you want in life.
PART ONE: CANDLE MAGICK
Introduction to Candle Magick
Although it is often written that the first candles were developed by the Ancient Greeks and Egyptians who used rush lights, or torches, made by soaking the pithy core of reeds in molten tallow, their rush lights had no wick. It was actually the Romans who are credited with developing the wick candle, using it to aid travelers in the dark and lighting homes and places of worship during the night. Like the early Greeks, the Egyptians and Romans relied on tallow, gathered from cattle or sheep suet, as the principal ingredient of candles. It was not until the Middle Ages that beeswax, a substance secreted by honey bees to make their honeycombs, was introduced. Beeswax candles were a marked improvement over those made with tallow, for they did not produce a smoky flame, or emit an acrid odor when burned. Instead, beeswax candles burned pure and clean. However, they were expensive, and, therefore, only the very wealthy could afford them.
What is Candle Magick?
The practice of candle magick is based upon the ancient art of pyromancy, which is one of the oldest forms of divination. It is said that in Ancient Greece, the virgins in the temple of Athena in Athens regularly practiced pyromancy. It is also thought that followers of Haphaestus the Greek god of fire and the forge practiced this form of divination. In ancient China, pyromancy in the form of burning or heating oracle bones goes as far back as the Neolithic period. Usually the shoulder blades of oxen or the shells of turtles were burned to produce cracks, which were then read as portents.
The most basic type of pyromancy is a form of scrying in which the diviner simply observes the flames from a fire, candle, or other source of flame, and interprets the shapes which he or she sees within them. People have always stared into flames in wonder, and candle magick, as we know it, is simply a variation of a long held tradition that has permeated various cultures throughout the ages.
Today’s candle magick is a popular spellcrafting technique that anyone can perform. You don’t have to be a witch, or have any prior knowledge of magick or spellwork in order to use candle magick, moreover it is simple to do, extremely versatile, and comparatively inexpensive. Your magickal machinations can be very basic in the beginning, becoming more intricate as you become more adept.
Burning candles invokes feelings of calm serenity, and helps you get in touch with the earth and the natural forces of the universe. Gazing into a candle’s flame can also be an aid to meditation and tapping into your inner self. Candle magick works because it is a method of focusing intent, and by focusing your intent in a ritual or ceremonial way, you are tunneling your own personal power to manifest your will. Through the law of attraction, you get what you concentrate on in life, and by concentrating on your hopes, desires, and aspirations you make the magick happen.
Candle Types
Most candles on the market today are made from paraffin wax. Paraffin wax is produced from the residue of petroleum, which can be bleached white and then dyed different colors; authentic beeswax candles are made from a natural wax produced in the hives of honey bees. Aromatic candles are paraffin or beeswax candles that have been scented during manufacture with extracts of oil from flowers, fruits, herbs, and other plants.
Modern candles come in many different shapes and sizes. The following are some of the more popular candle types.
Taper: Slender candles – typically 6 to 18 inches high and designed to be held upright by a candle holder. Paraffin tapers are either made in a mold, or by the traditional method of dipping a length of wick into hot molten wax. Beeswax tapers may be made in a similar fashion, or by rolling individual sheets of beeswax around candle wicks. The most common tapers are 1/2 or 7/8 inch in diameter.
Chime or Spirit: Chime or spirit candles are
