THAT ’ S WHAT YOU THINK !
PROFESSOR LOVE
MARCH10
Dear Professor Love,
Life is SO not fair! My 2 sisters have boyfriends. They’ve always had boyfriends. And when they break up (They always do the breaking. Nobody ever breaks up with them!), they get new boyfriends within the week. They have dates every weekend. The only dates I have are pity dates, when my friends fix me up with their guy friends.I’ve suffered through so many blind dates, my sisters say I should get a guide dog.
What should I do?
— Boyfriendless
Dear Boyfriendless,
Take a deep breath, girlfriend! I know where you’re coming from because I’ve been there. But I’m working on changing my tune. Why do we think we have 2 have boyfriends? Sounds like your sisters aren’t doing so well in that department if they’re breaking up all the time, right? Maybe you and those friends of yours should stop the blind date train and just go out together. Have fun!Develop friendships with guys. BTW, a date can be the worst place for friendships! And breakups can be the worst thing for friends.
But maybe your sisters are right about 1 thing. Get a dog — dogs rock!
Love, Professor Love
Annie Lind leaned back and admired her work as Professor Love. The whole That’s What You Think! blog team had met at the cottage earlier, like they did most Saturday mornings. Annie had taken up half the time telling them her big news: her cousin Shawna would be coming to Big Lake for the summer. Annie didn’t know if she could wait two whole months.
Since she still had an hour to kill before cheerleading practice, Annie hung around after the meeting was over. She adored the cottage, with its giant fireplace, wooden beams, and white stucco walls. It belonged to Gracie’s bio mom, who was off in Europe someplace. The cottage was perfect for writing her love advice column.
She got back to it.
Dear Professor Love,
I’m in love with Jennifer. And I totally trust her. It’s just that there are so many guys at my school who wouldlike to have my Jennifer. And she’s so friendly with everybody. I get crazy when I see her talking with some guy by her locker or in the cafeteria or after school. When I can’t find Jen, or I call her and she doesn’t pick up, or I drive by her house and see her car gone, I fly into a jealous rage. I’m afraid my jealousy will drive her away.
Is it expecting too much for her to let me know where she is at all times?
— Watchdog
Annie didn’t even have to think about this one. She set her fingers to the keyboard.
Dear Watchdog,
Hmm . . . Is it 2 much 2 expect for you 2 know where Jennifer is at all times? Of course not — as long as she’s in prison. That’s the only way you can be sure where she is every minute.
Sounds like the problem isn’t Jennifer. It’s you, Watchdog! You’re jealous without cause. I suggest you get a grip.Actually, I suggest you loosen that grip!
Love, Professor Love
Dear Professor Love,
Why is life so unfair? I’m a nice person. I’m not hot, but i’m okay to look at. Still, my whole life it’s seemed like everybody is more popular than i am. When girls hit themall, nobody thinks 2 ask me. I’m left out when they go 2 a game together or just hang out before school. I wish i could trade lives. It’s always been like this. If there are three of us, i’m the odd girl out. Hey — when i was little, i had two imaginary friends. They wouldn’t let me play with them.
— The unfair maiden
Annie laughed out loud at that one. Then she typed her answer:
Dear Maiden,
Don’t trade places with anyone! Sounds to me as if you have a great sense of humor. (I LOL at your exclusive imaginary friends!)
Most people in middle school and high school feel like the odd person out. (It’s one of the best kept secrets of high school!) Don’t forget that you’re exactly the person God wants you to be. You think God makes mistakes? No way! Without you, there would be a hole in the universe!
Love, Professor Love
Annie stopped typing and glanced through the rest of the e-mails in her Professor Love
pile. There was a question —more like a gripe — from a kid who studied hard for B’s, while his brother got A’s without studying. Somebody who called herself Two-Ton began her e-mail with the same two words that kept popping up: No fair!
Gracie!
Annie shouted. She had to see this. Annie scrolled down and found another e-mail complaining about life’s unfairness. Gracie! I think I’ve got our blog theme!
That did it. Annie heard the squeak of chair legs on the wood floor, followed by Gracie’s footsteps overhead.
You better not be playing me, Prof,
Gracie warned, bounding down the stairs two at a time. In seconds, she was reading over Annie’s shoulder. I’d just about given up on a theme.
When they’d ended the blog meeting, Gracie’s instructions had been for everybody to write their columns, and she’d figure out a theme later. Several months
