About this audiobook

Bailey Thorne doesn't hate Jake the Rake, just despises him. She blames the rumor mill at her school...and, okay, him. His adorable son has only been in preschool, but Jake has already made an impressive dent in dating the unmarried faculty. She's had to hear of his every exploit from the broken hearts he's left behind. She was fine to loathe him from afar, but now his son has entered kindergarten--and she's the teacher. It's going to be a very long school year.

Jake Polaski was more than fine to avoid Ms. Thorne after it became clear she was not amused by his very existence. But then they get stuck in an elevator for an evening. He finds out that underneath that baleful glare she always gives him, lies a warm, funny and sexy as hell woman. He does his best to not be smitten after every exchange afterward. His son needs him rational, steadfast...and love is the most uncertain thing.

It was the elevator's fault. Had it worked like it should, Bailey would have gone on with her life without seeing why so many of her co-workers had fallen for the grumpy single dad. (It's his dry wit, his playful teasing and the drool-worthy cut of his jawline.) And now she's caught in the way he doles out smiles and the dark depths of his secrets. If nothing else, she knows from rumor there's a clock ticking on their affair before it implodes because things always do with Jake the Rake, but she can't seem to walk away first.

Author

Melissa Blue

Melissa Blue’s writing career started on a typewriter one month after her son was born. This would have been an idyllic situation for a writer if it had been 1985, not 2004. She penned that first contemporary romance, upgraded to a computer and hasn’t looked back since. Outside of writing, Blue works as a mail clerk for the federal government, has a paralegal certificate (that she has more use for as a dust pan) and is a mother of two rambunctious children. She lives in California where the wine is good and, despite popular belief, is not always sunny.

This was really sweet and just spice enough. The plot was relateable, and though this was short, it was well done. The story didn't seem rushed or unfinished.

Low angst enemies to lovers interracial romance. Definitely didn’t think he was as grumpy as the title suggests but overall it was a sweet and steamy romance between a teacher and one of her students father!

This started off very cute but then it started becoming so cliche. Le Sigh ugh ????. Why do so many great story lines fall through the cracks from jumping the gun. I literally read so many novellas and they build the story lines so well and then there was this and I was super disappointed. I enjoyed the idea the execution just wasn't there. I wish I enjoyed this more and I even skimmed once I hit 80% of the book. Ugh on to the next one.

    Wish me luck

    Happy reading everyone

Grumpy Jake finds love. Adorable story that is short and sweet. I will be reading more from Melissa Blue.

Narrator could have done a better job with Jake's character.

This was a cute enemies-to-lovers ish, low angst novella. I had fun with this one. Bailey is a kindergarten teacher who despises the father of a boy who is in her class. He has a reputation of having relationships with all the teacher and staff at his sons school and cutting them off at a certain point.

Bailey was a fun character. I enjoyed her personality, spunk, and the little banter between her and Jake. I loved her as a teacher and the relationship she had with Jake's son. As a teacher myself, I loved seeing that part portrayed in the story.

As for Jake, he was a misunderstood character with a sad backstory. He also built a bad reputation, which he brought on himself by serially dating teacher's in his son's school. I love me a misunderstood character. I felt he totally lacked the grumpy part, hence the title of the book. I really didn't see the grump at all, though Bailey was trying hard to make it seem that way. Instead what I did see, was a caring father who is dealing with grief the best way he can, which was not talking about it. As a (single) mom myself, I totally understood why he was the way he was when it came to dating and the women he brought around his son. I did however feel like his reasoning for ending things with Bailey was a bit much, but again as a parent I can understand.

The romance in this book was cute and definitely had some steamy parts. I needed a little more enemies-to-lovers vibes though. I felt it was a lacking in that. I did love seeing their relationship blossom and grow, which was believable. I also liked the attraction and the sexual tension they secretly had for each other.

Overall, I really enjoyed this read. Though it had a few things missing and moved rather quick, that is expected from a novella. However, it left me satisfied and wishing to have more of Bailey and Jake's story.
