It was a chilly, spooktacular Halloween night, and the moon was full and bright. This was the first year Mom had bought Halloween costumes for us, at the local TG&Y discount store. Adorned in brightly colored plastic masks and vinyl smocks, my brother was a pirate and I was a princess.
My family loaded up in our roomy station wagon and headed to our local grade school for its annual Pumpkin Fest. Bright orange and black crepe streamers were strewn over the doorway as we entered the school's gymnasium for a night of family fun. Laughter and excitement filled the air as adults and students gathered.
