THE RAINBOW ROOT

Growing carrots can be a bit hit and miss, but the excitement of harvest and the flavour of that first homegrown crunch can make growing your own worth another try.

There are two important things to do to grow carrots successfully. The first is to prepare the soil. Carrots need it loose, deep and free of clods, stones or other objects that get in the way of root growth. Deep, sandy soils are ideal.

To prepare, dig the soil over but avoid adding extra nutrients, particularly fresh compost or manure, as they can lead to forking, the condition where carrots develop distorted shapes.
