So many of us have developed new relationships with the natural world since the start of the pandemic two years ago. Limited geographically and socially, we’ve taken to our local parks, riverside paths and woodland trails like never before. You just need to look at the growing popularity of LGBTQ+ hiking groups, such as OutdoorLads and Hiking Dykes London, to see that. Fuelled by takeaway cappuccinos and wearing old trainers that had been lying abandoned in the back of cupboards for years, we’ve learned the names of birds we didn’t know existed and noticed wildflowers we’d never seen before. Inspired, we’re now looking further afield, wondering how we can explore more of the great outdoors.
The answer may be to consider a multi-day hiking trail. Walking from one place to another for several days, or even weeks, gives us a chance to forget the rat race and immerse ourselves in the journey. You don’t have to be Bear Grylls, lugging a massive rucksack day in and day out, pitching a tent in gale-force winds and foraging in the woods for your next meal.
