Discover double knitting

DOUBLE KNITTING is an intriguing technique that produces a double-layered fabric, where both sides look like the ‘right’ side and motifs are reversible. Some of us may remember the double jersey garments of the 1980s, and this technique is exactly the same.

According to Barbara Smith’s blog, , the first example of double knitting that we know of is in a book from 1849 called by Esther Copley. She describes a double-layered fabric: “The texture throughout, though thick, is loose, and is adapted to purposes in which warmth and softness are required rather than elegance of appearance, and by Miss Watts, both from the 1840s.
