I wasn’t stupid. I thought he’d head off in the dawn and I’d never see him again
I think I’d always known – the way meerkats sense predators and dogs are coolly detached with non-doggy people, I always knew that Richard was out of my league in some odd way.
He drove a car in college when the rest of us huddled at bus stops, college scarves glistening with raindrops. He wasn’t tall but what he lacked in inches, he made up for in charisma. He wore it like expensive scent.
