Addidas is honoring the great Jackie Robinson in a major way.
According to Footwear News, the sportswear giant will honor the 70th annivesary of Robinson breaking baseball’s restrictive color lines with the release of special edition Adizero Afterburner cleats and Icon Turf Trainer sneakers.
Designed with the famous baseball player in mind, the Adizero Afterburner features a cream and bronze upper with gold foil detailing.
According to Adidas, the bronze hue is a tribute to the legendary Ebbets Field in Brooklyn, the place where Robinson started his career. The park’s facade also appears on the heels.
The shoe company also used brown and black tweed stitched stripes as a nod to the suit jacket Robinson wore the day of his retirement, and stitched his career stats on the pull-tabs.
Much like the matching cleat, the Icon Turf Trainer also features tweed as a nod to Robinson’s retirement suit jacket, and gold foil detailing his career stats on the heel tabs. The sneakers also boast a leather heel and a reinforced heel clip in the shape of Ebbets Field.
Both the cleat and turf shoes are equipped with insoles that feature a sketch of Robinson sliding into second base.
If these high-performance shoes weren’t enough, Adidas is heading to Robinson’s alma mater, John Muir High School in Pasadena, Calif to install a new baseball field at the legend’s name.
The Adizero Afterburner will retail for $120, while the Icon Turf Trainer will come up to a $100. Both models will be available via the Adidas, Eastbay and Dick’s Sporting Goods web stores.
