We've become a tad obsessed with TV themes in the past few weeks (you may have noticed). We've already covered kids' shows and sitcoms… now it's time for drama.

Dark and foreboding; whimsically jaunty; oddly sax-heavy: dramatic programmes have offered up some of the best and most underrated songs of all time – whether they're sci-fi, fantasy, crime or romance.

Well, that was until the likes of 24 and Lost started the trend of not bothering with a theme at all. Idiots. But there are still some gems to be found.

As usual, our only rule is that the theme had to be made specifically for the show in question. So, no Sopranos, The Wire or even Charmed.

25. Poirot

A suitably French-inspired little ditty that perfectly sums up David Suchet's portly and often cheeky investigator.

24. Poldark

Anne Dudley's score is so beautiful that we're genuinely annoyed it only lasts 30 seconds. If this was on HBO we'd have at least four minutes of it.

23. A Touch of Frost

More a jazz improvisation than a theme, but there's something so epic and brooding about it. And it works so well with David Jason's grumpy face.

22. Murder She Wrote

If you prefer your crime dramas a little less depressing, then this upbeat number for Jessica Fletcher is pure daytime treat magic.

21. Star Trek

While The Next Generation was also great, you just can't beat the original's otherworldly, soaring theme.

20. Dallas

It doesn't get much more '80s nor spell out AMERICAN SOAP more than this. And that's some serious slappadabass action.

19. The Avengers

As cool as John Steed and Emma Peel themselves, it has all the best bits of both James Bond and Austin Powers in one go.

18. Six Feet Under

Anything that Thomas Newman touches, from American Beauty to Finding Nemo, is pure soundtrack gorgeousness, and he did it again with the intro for this poignant drama about death.

17. The A-Team

You need something as brilliantly bombastic and bonkers as this for a show featuring Dirk Benedict and Mr T on the run. Also, the first of four entries from Mike Post – what a man.

16. Due South

You might not have seen a lot of this 1990s crime gem focusing on a Canadian Mountie, but its intro sounds like an awesome chilled U2 B-side.

15. The Rockford Files

Another Mike Post gem, this James Garner series had possibly the greatest electro keyboard solo ever to be heard in a theme tune. So damned catchy.

14. The X-Files

The Twilight Zone was eerie, Stranger Things is mysterious, but The X-Files is still the greatest horror theme tune of all time. So good that it reached number two in the UK chart.

13. Angel

The first of three Joss Whedon series in the list (he knows his theme tunes). Its predecessor may have the edge, but we still love the cellos-vs-guitars danger of this one.

12. Firefly

The second Whedon entry, but the only one with lyrics. Written by Whedon himself, it's a rather beautiful Western ballad that's a genuinely great song in its own right.

11. Ally McBeal

As '90s as dancing to Deep Blue Something in a Global Hypercolor shirt, and just as good. Thank you, Vonda!

10. Magnum PI

Another Mike Post banger. And it's as amazing as Tom Selleck's incredible collection of short shorts.

9. Mission: Impossible

It's easy to forget that M:I was a TV show first. And its Lalo Schifrin theme tune is so iconic that it almost transcends television.

8. Quantum Leap

The highest Post tune in the list goes to this '80s classic that you can't help but sing along to with a big cheesy grin on your face. Especially if you were a massive fan at the time. And ever since. *cough*

7. Peter Gunn

If you've never heard of this show before, you've almost certainly heard the theme tune. Henry Mancini's swaggering instrumental is easily more famous than the show that it actually came from. It was about a private eye, by the way.

6. Hawaii Five-0

Similar to Peter Gunn, you probably know the tune better than the show. Or its recent remake. And you know it's good, because it formed the basis of a Jive Bunny smash.

5. Game of Thrones

See, they do still make some good ones every now and then. Ramin Djawadi's score is so strangely catchy that it's physically impossible to skip. Fun game: make up your own lyrics to sing along each week! Just us?

4. Buffy the Vampire Slayer

Short but not in any way sweet. It has a catchy guitar power that Black Sabbath would be proud of and it gets you seriously pumped for the episode ahead.

3. Baywatch

This show's second season brought in Survivor's Jimi Jamison to provide an amazing power ballad that summed up the era, and still floods cheese night dance floors to this day. The first series made do with the less thrilling 'Above The Waterline' by Kim Carnes.

2. Knight Rider

Yep, the top 3 drama theme tunes really do contain two shows starring David Hasselhoff. This is one of the best electro songs of all time, let alone theme tunes.

1. Doctor Who

We're mainly talking the haunting original rather than the watered-down remixes of recent years. Not only is Ron Grainer and Delia Derbyshire's track a brilliant theme, but it actually helped invent electronic music as we know it. So, for that reason alone, it has to be number one.

And it's from 1963. 1963! So far ahead of its time it's almost like they had help from a time-traveller. HEY WAIT A MI-
