It wasn’t that long ago Gary O’Neil looked like a dead man walking at Wolves. His side were rooted to the foot of the table and talk had already turned to relegation. All the signs pointed to a parting of ways between manager and club.
But as Storm Bert took hold in the capital, it seems O’Neil has weathered his own tempest. For now, at least.
In fact, at full-time it was he who whipped the drenched visiting support into a frenzy, aiming a string of fist pumps and a roar of delight in their direction.
Deservedly so too after watching his side stick four past Fulham to claim a first away win in 11 matches and back-to-back league wins for the first time since February.
A blinding brace from Matheus Cunha and a goal apiece from Joao Gomes and Goncalo Guedes helped to lift Wolves out of the relegation zone.
‘I was really pleased for the fans and players,’ said a buoyant O’Neil. ‘They’ve both suffered some tough weeks recently so I wanted them both to enjoy that.
Wolves made it two wins in a row with an impressive 4-1 victory over Fulham at Craven Cottage
The in-form Matheus Cunha scored twice as Wolves climbed out of the relegation zone
The win eased the pressure on Gary O'Neil and came after they beat Southampton last time out
‘There has been a lot of hard work but we’ve never shown any cracks. We fought to turn the situation around and it was a step in the right direction today.’
Wolves’ win came in spite of Fulham’s early dominance as Alex Iwobi put the hosts ahead.
The Nigerian turned on the style by curling wonderfully into the far corner from the edge of the box after Raul Jimenez had struck the bar from five yards out against his old side.
Wolves had hardly laid a glove on Marco Silva’s team by the time they levelled.
A sensational pass from make-shift centre back Mario Lemina landed right on Cunha’s toes and the Brazilian did the rest with Samba style, lifting the ball over goalkeeper Bernd Leno.
Eight minutes into the second-half Wolves were ahead as Cunha slid Joao Gomes into the Fulham box, where he struck emphatically across Leno and into the far corner.
Silva turned to super sub Harry Wilson, who rattled the bar after coming off the bench, but his side ended up playing the final 15 minutes with 10 men when Joachim Andersen limped off after all five substitutions had been made.
Joao Gomes put O'Neil's side 2-1 ahead, before Cunha and Goncalo Guedes added the gloss
Alex Iwobi had put Fulham 1-0 up earlier in the afternoon with an impressive left footed finish
The former Arsenal and Everton man continued his brilliant season with the early strike
Cunha has now netted seven goals in just 12 appearances in the Premier League this season
It was a disappointing day for Marco Silva, whose side saw their recent progress come to a halt
‘Not just one thing went wrong today,’ Silva reflected.
‘I think what made the big impact was the way we conceded the first goal. It was a very good pass and good movement from him (Cunha), but we should have done better.’
Wolves rubbed salt in the wounds with two late strikes in the space of eight minutes. First, the brilliant Cunha bent a shot delightfully into the far corner for his seventh goal of the season before substitute Guedes finished off a counter-attack deep into stoppage time.
