Kerr's Matildas team-mate and Manchester City star Mary Fowler was one of the first to comment, writing: 'Congratulations' adding a 'heart-eyes' emoji.

The Matildas official account followed suit, writing 'Congratulations' with a 'love-heart' emoji. Several other women's football stars commented on the post, including Fran Kirby, who wrote: 'Omg. Congratulations to both of you.'

Chelsea Women's Instagram account also sent their congratulations, while Australia defender Caitlin Cooper wrote: 'AMAZING. Best news ever!!!!'

It comes as Kerr has been sidelined since December after she suffered an anterior cruciate ligament injury during a training camp with the south-west London club.

Kerr was forced to undergo surgery and enter a rehabilitation period, ruling her out of the remainder of the 2023-2024 season.

She is yet to return for the Blues this season and but the 31-year-old had hinted that she may have to delay her comeback for a little longer having told the BBC in September that there was 'a little bit more going on than an ACL.'

Kerr had allayed fears that she would leave Chelsea and said she would return soon, as she celebrated her five-year anniversary with the club.

'5 years with Chelsea,' she posted with a blue heart emoji.

'Be back soon x.'

Her fiance Kristie Mewis replied: 'Can’t come fast enough'.

Mewis, 33, and Kerr have been together since 2021 and got engaged last year following weeks of speculation.

Kerr had been spotted on social media wearing a golden ring on her wedding finger in September 2023, with Mewis, who plays for West Ham and the United States national team, going on to reveal the news that the pair were engaged in November.

Speaking on her partner, Mewis told People Magazine: 'She's [Kerr] is my biggest supporter, always listening to me nag and complain, all of my crazy antics.'

It is understood that the couple had met while they were both competing for clubs in the National Women's Soccer League in the USA back in 2019.

The pair had spoken online for nearly four months during the 2020 Covid-19 pandemic, with the pair also understood to have spent two weeks in lockdown together.

In 2021, America would take on Australia at the Tokyo Olympics and the pair made headlines as they went head-to-head during the semi-finals of the women's football tournament.

In September, Kerr left some fans wondering when she might make a return to the football field after suggesting her return could be delayed a little longer, claiming she had 'a little bit more going on than an ACL'

The pair were seen having an on-field embrace following the match.

They would cross paths again on the international stage later that November, again sharing a hug after the match following a 1-1 draw between Australia and the US.

'We're not private people. I like sharing my story. I like sharing who I am outside of football' Kerr told UK publication Gaffer earlier this year.

'Football is five per cent of my life' she added.

The pair would celebrate their engagement at the beginning of this year, with Kerr heading back to Perth from London to catch up with family and friends at The Raffles Hotel.

They posed for a few snaps next to a huge cake and while celebrating with a few drinks in the Perth sun.

'[It is great to] celebrate all of us, family, friends, everyone,' she Kerr said, during a short speech to those in attendance.

'Thanks everyone, we can't wait for the wedding!'

This year, Mewis and Kerr have spent some time back home in Australia, with Mewis or Kerr not being selected to play for America or Australia at the Paris Olympics.

Mewis' last appearance for West Ham came on September 21, with the couple recently being spotted in London at the Reimagining the Future Gala Dinner for Lewis Hamilton's foundation, Mission 44.

The pair were the talk of the event as they arrived at the Design Museum in London, locked hand-in-hand earlier this November.

Kristie was wearing a stunning dress that featured artistic graphic designs of eyes and lips, with the West Ham midfielder, who joined the Irons in 2023, looking smitten as she and the Chelsea forward embraced.
