Everton 0-0 Newcastle - Premier League RECAP: score and updates as Anthony Gordon wastes huge chance to put Magpies ahead

That's all from us tonight and thank you for joining our coverage of the goalless draw between Everton and Newcastle. It might not have been the classic we were hoping for but it was still filled with incident.

That may be it for Saturday's Premier League action but Sunday promises much. Tottenham vs Brighton and Aston Villa vs Manchester United - we'll be on hand with all the updates from those huge clashes too.

Five games since start of last season with no Wilson/Isak & zero wins. NUFC were better team, had lots of territory. Performance (after other away shockers) was encouraging. But decision/execution in final third poor, as was general ball retention at times. Was there to be won.

Sean Dyche, Everton boss, Sky Sports:

We had a lot of mistakes earlier in the season. You can't make that many mistakes. We had to cut that out. We are showing signs that we are beginning to do that, and when you do the basics right they usually look after you.

All I can look at is this group, the intent form them, they have gone out and delivered a strong performance against a very good side. The mentality grows. You try and be optimistic. We keep moving forward and we get more injuries, so we have to hope everyone comes through this period, and we get some players back.

Eddie Howe, Newcastle boss, MOTD:

We created a lot of good chances and I am frustrated we haven't won. But it was much better. It looked like we were snatching at chances. I have to credit the players because it is a difficult environment to play in and it is a much better defensive display from us too. Big steps forward.

I think Anthony [Gordon] handled the occasion very well. I think his all-round game was very good. He will be disappointed with the penalty. Credit to Jordan Pickford for the save.

It was a good night for the more than 800,000 FPL players who had Pickford as the goalkeeper. I mean, madness if you ask me but I can't really talk seeing as my selection David Raya has conceded three goals in the last two games to newly-promoted sides.

Anyway, back on topic, Pickford's heroics tonight have seen him rack up 15 points. That's a tidy haul.

Jordon Pickford, Everton, Sky Sports:

I watched the game last week and he reversed [his penalty] against Ederson and before he went the same way so I just fancied him to go keeper's left which I did.

I don't think Ant executed it to perfection, he'll be disappointed but I'm there to make the save and that's what I did.

Dan Burn, Newcastle United, Sky Sports:

I thought we were a lot better, battled well and dealt with their physicality, but disappointed we haven't come away with three points.

It was a big wake up call, [the defeat to] Fulham, I think we were getting complacent and we had words. We always back [Anthony] Gordon to score them. He has been an amazing player since he signed. We wanted to pull a result out for him because it will hurt him."

The draw sees Newcastle move a point ahead of Tottenham, who play tomorrow, while Everton climb up to 17th and level on points with Ipswich.

Good to see Pickford and Gordon share a moment after the final whistle. I just wonder whether the Everton stopper used it as an opportunity to poke fun at his former team-mates after saving his penalty in the first half.

After all, we all know the England stopper likes to get in his opponent's faces and under their skin.

Goalless at Goodison. The first draw of the day as well but the game did provide plenty of entertainment. Of course all the focus will be on Gordon, who would have had at least two on another day.

Everton will be the happier side after riding their luck. Eddie Howe meanwhile, will be livid. Aside from the penalty, his side had numerous opportunities to score a goal but it wasn't to be.

It's cynical and late from the Newcastle defender. He chops down Calvert-Lewin, gets a yellow card and concedes a free-kick in a threatening position.

McNeil and Garner are standing over this one but it looks too far out to hit and too central to cross.

We're into stoppage time At least one big chance left in this one surely? Surely?!

It's Almiron's turn to be the culprit. To be fair to him, the pass into him didn't exactly aid his attempt to beat Pickford. The Magpies winger produced a limp effort from the edge of the area after more great build-up play from the visitors. Not long left now for them to get their rewards for all this effort.

Ndiaye has put in another good performance for the Toffees and he's responsible for the booking for Hall. The Newcastle defender was forced to take down the Senegal international after he turned him inside out on the byline.

Gordon would have been praying for a chance almost as good as the penalty he missed earlier and he's just got it. Unfortunately for Magpies fans, he fluffed his lines when it came.

Gordon was clean through on goal, at an angle, yes, but free of a defender nevertheless. The youngster lashed his effort high over Pickford's goal when he really should have done better.

NUFC escape what looked like a penalty for Everton after Burn trip on DCL. But again, it comes from giving the ball away. Tonali, for such a technical player, continues to be one of those most guilty of this.

The final push. Can anyone find a winner in this one? I remain convinced that this will NOT end goalless, though I will concede that my confidence has reduced somewhat.

With all the chaos I forgot to inform you of a set of changes. Murphy has come off for Joe Willock, while the latest raft of changes has seen Longstaff and Livramento come on for Tonali and Trippier.

Dyche has also turned to his bench, bringing on Iroegbunam for Jack Harrison.

It's a quick check from VAR. Calvert-Lewin and Dyche can't believe it but replays do show that the Everton striker struck the back of the Burn's leg. Probably the right decision.

Hang on a minute. It's all kicking off. Calvert-Lewin has a shot which is wonderfully saved by Pope before Doucoure skies the rebound over the bar from close range.

However, Everton want a penalty. Calvert-Lewin looked to be denied from having a shot himself by Dan Burn. This is going to VAR.

Almiron is involved straight away, delivering a cross-shot to the near post that Pickford was forced to turn away. They just keep knocking on the door.

Harvey Barnes has been on the periphery of the game and he has been replaced by Miguel Almiron.

What can Dyche do to stem this steady flow of Newcastle pressure? It only feels like a matter of time until the visitors take the lead. The home crowd can sense it, I can sense it, surely he can too.

Mangala's evening is over. He hasn't covered himself in glory, to be honest. Gueye comes on for his just before the hour.

Are Newcastle going to rue these missed chances. More great work from Gordon and Joelinton leads to a chance for the Magpies skipper Guimaraes but the Brazilian was found lacking with his effort on his weaker foot on the edge of the area.

It’s ironic that Anthony Gordon has played well for Newcastle this evening but unless he can conjure up the winner, he’s going to go down as the villain for his penalty miss. He’s not hiding though and beat Ashley Young all ends up at the start of the second half to set up a chance

Newcastle have started the second half as they ended the first but they still can't find that final pass. This time it's Joelinton running beyond Mangala in defence. The Brazilian tried to find Gordon in the middle but the pass was well cut out for a corner.

Howe will be desperate for his team to capitalise on their dominance.

The Italian scratched at a chance from close range after more great work from Gordon. The Magpies winger's cross found Joelinton at the far post, who found Tonali in the middle with a header. But the former AC Milan star completely mistimed his effort and saw his shot slice off his foot.

Toffees are attacking the Gwladys Street End in the second half.

Players are coming back out for the second period here. Doesn't look like we had any changes.

Phil Jagielka, Ex-Everton defender, Sky Sports:

I don't think Body Slam was in the notes. The fact is that [Tarkowski] was so determined to throw [Tonali] to the ground. Realistically any contact is going to be checked by VAR and as soon as the referee went over to check it was game over for him really.

NUFC better team despite mid-half lull. But execution in final third + ball retention (Tonali/Hall guilty a few times) needs to improve. Have they really looked like scoring (pen apart)? Feels like game is there to be won for visitors. Will no striker cost them?

It's goalless at the break but that doesn't mean we've been devoid of intrigue. Newcastle will obviously feel like they should be ahead after Gordon's penalty miss. But Everton will also look back on the first half with some positivity, having breached their opponent's net, albeit from an offside position.

I refuse to believe this is going to end 0-0. Refuse.

Gordon is involved again. He's been the best player on the pitch. The Newcastle winger rose about the Everton defence but decided to head back to his team-mate instead of going for goal.

Joelinton tried to flick the pass on goal but his effort flew high over the bar. Gordon really should have gone for goal there.

That VAR delay is to blame surely? We've also had a disallowed goal to be fair. Six minutes added on at the end of the half here.

A late tackle from the Everton midfielder is greeted with a yellow card by the referee. McNeil was a little upset to lose a dual with Joelinton and he took it out on the Brazilian.

The fouls on Gordon are totting up and the boos are growing in volume but Gordon continues to run and run. He hasn't stopped going and he'll now be desperate to make amends for that penalty miss and quiet he crowd, who are loving his failure.

Pickford to the rescue and Goodison erupts. The former Everton star stepped up to take the penalty but it was nothing like his effort last week. Gordon went to Pickford's left, the England No 1 guessed right and was then swamped by his team-mates.

The fans celebrated like they'd scored a goal.

Tarkowski is penalised for the mindless decision. With Isak injured, it looks like Gordon is going to take this. I fancy him to score.

Tarkowski what have you done?! The Everton skipper has just thrown Tonali to the ground off the ball. VAR are checking. It was certainly unwarranted. The referee is going to the screen, we know what this means...

I've certainly seen closer in the age of VAR but there wasn't much in the offside for Doucoure's disallowed goal. Newcastle will be worried by how much space there was between the two centre backs.

Pickford taking advantage of a break in play to run up to the halfway line and give animated instructions to Doucoure and Ndiaye. It seems the ‘keeper wants to take advantage of his long-range kicking

The game has just got back underway after a delay due to an injury to James Garner. The defender is fit enough to continue and will rejoin the action shortly. Since the disallowed goal, Newcastle have woken up.

The old cliche applies, the first goal will be crucial in this game.

Sorry Toffees fans, it's been chalked off. Doucoure had just strayed beyond the Newcastle defence before he rose like a salmon to meet Garner's cross.

Unfortunate for the home side as it was a really well-taken goal. That'll surely give them a confidence boost.

Everton take the lead with a superb Doucoure header but wait, it looks close for offside. It's going to VAR.

Newcastle are playing like a side who remember the 3-0 hiding they took at Goodison last season. They’ve started the brighter and possibly should be ahead already. Gordon looking lively leading the attack.

Really good play from Calvert-Lewin. He's looking in the mood today. He's just used his pace and skill to turn the Magpies defence inside out but his shot from outside the area was too tame to seriously test Pope.

This is a big test for Newcastle today. It was the question I put to Eddie Howe yesterday – why do you look like an away team away from home? To give that context, Newcastle at their best away from home play exactly how they do at home - all intensity and attacking intent.

So far this season, they've been poor on the road. So while last weekend at home to Manchester City was much improved, Howe agreed that this game will be more informative as to whether his team truly are back to their best.

How has that not gone in?! Ndiaye denies Guimaraes on the line after the Brazilian's shot trickled past Pickford. The forward didn't seem to know too much about it but his intervention saved the day.

The home fans had to endure a nervy moment just a second ago when Anthony Gordon looked to chase down a pass to Pickford. The Everton was cool as a cucumber, took a touch and fired off a raking 60-yard pass upfield to Harrison.

300 up for the Newcastle manager today. He's only the 20th manager to reach that tally in the Premier League.

It's been a scrappy start to proceedings. Newcastle and Everton have both had deep free kicks. The home side's even forced Nick Pope into action. Early doors but it looks like they're just feeling each other out.

Predictably, the name of Anthony Gordon is loudly booed around Goodison when read out. The former Evertonian has a key role for Newcastle today as a false nine in the injury absences of Alex Isak and Callum Wilson

Everton get the game underway in front of an expectant Goodison Park crowd.

That's good to be a nice confidence boost for the Everton and England No 1. Pickford hasn't been in great form to start this season, he'll be keen to put that straight tonight.

The players are coming out onto the pitch. I think this could be a really game, Newcastle look like really good team again and Everton always, well, nearly always, get a boost when playing in front of their fans.

No Brathwaite is a major blow though, is it a coincidence their first win came when he was back in the team?

The numbers below make for a sorry reading for Dyche and his team. Everton sit rock bottom on several key defensive metrics including goals conceded from crosses and open play goals.

They fare slightly better when it comes to xG against, they're only 19th best in the division in that statistic.

It was unfortunate. Myko (calf) took a knock last weekend. We thought it was a knock, it settled down and then turns out to be a small strain and it's too much for today.

What a day for goals and drama in the Premier League today has been. The slate of 3pm fixtures have just finished and there were some pretty bonkers scorelines across the country. Headline take, things look bad for Gary O'Neil at Wolves. The international break has come at an ominous time.

The Saudis arrived on Tyneside to much fanfare and furore but now it seems as though their interest in the club has cooled. What does that mean for Eddie Howe and his troops? You're going to get bored of me saying it tonight, but it can't be forgotten that Everton are playing in their final season at the Goodison, their home since 1892.

The Toffees have made strides to ensure that the memory of their old ground will not be forgotten when they move to Bramley Moore Dock, unlike some other clubs who seem to have left the past in the past.

Whenever you go there, it is a difficult game. The ground has that feel, with the fans involved in the game right from the off and very close to the pitch.

I think how you start the game and impose yourself on the opposition there is hugely important so we’ll want to be really positive in our approach. We’ve got to learn lessons from the Fulham game in our last away performance.

Why change a winning formula? Well, a drawing formula. Howe has kept faith with the starting XI that earned a point against City last time out. That means that Isak continues his spell on the sidelines with a broken toe and Gordon leads the line.

Dyche is forced into a change in his backline as Jarrad Branthwaite missed out through injury, having only just come back last week. Elsewhere, Mykolenko drops out for Garner.

That's one Anthony Gordon who returns to Goodison Park tonight with his Newcastle team-mates. The Everton academy graduate left the club in a big-money move last year and got his first taste of life on the other side when the Magpies came here in December 2023.

That one ended 3-0 to his old side. He'll be hoping for better today and he arrives in good form after netting in Newcastle's last win against Man City.
