Wolves 1-2 Liverpool - Premier League RECAP: Mo Salah's penalty sees Reds leapfrog Man City to go top of the table after Ibrahima Konate's opener was cancelled out by Rayan Ait-Nouri

Thanks for joining us for tonight's Premier League clash at Molineux. Arne Slot's side were the victors on this occasion and have lept to the top of the pile. Although, Unai Emery's Aston Villa will get the chance to join them tomorrow with a win at Ipswich.

From Ipswich to Manchester, Milan and now Wolverhampton, Arne Slot's travel plans have been in good order.

Smooth at times when moving forward. Almost always solid at the back. Here they needed both elements and a decision in their favour for the penalty converted by Mo Salah to settle the contest.

Wolves had flickered, threatened intermittently and fought their way back onto level terms after going behind to a header by Ibrahima Konate in stoppage time at the end of the first half.

Reds return to top of Premier League thanks to goals from Konate and Mo Salah as Gary O'Neil's strugglers stay bottom

Gary O'Neil, Sky Sports:

The lads gave everything we had a right go. We lost control and went off game plan just after the goal, got caught in the emotion of equalising and got badly punished as we have been at the moment.

Another game against top opposition where we do our best so I'm gutted for the lads because they've deserved more for the effort they've put in over the last few weeks.

Liverpool may have climbed to the top of the Premier League with the win tonight but doesn't mean their star players performed better than their oponents.

Take at look at who our expert Dominic King thought was outstanding and who will feel they could have done more.

If not for his error which led to Wolves' equaliser, Konate would probably have won the MOTM award. Nevermind, he still had a commanding performance at the back.

The Liverpool forward has drawn level with Sergio Aguero in sixth-place for the most goal involvements for a Premier League side. His winner tonight took his tally for the Reds to 231.

Arne Slot, Sky Sports:

For the long term you also have to look at the performance and I don't think we started off well and that's credit to Wolves and Gary O'Neil, they had a real good game plan and a week to prepare.

We had some problems in teh first 15 to 20 minutes, afterwards, I think we took control of the game and it wasn't that strange that we scored the opener.

[Wolves] overloaded our right side a lot with many players - that's why it was a bit more difficult for us at the start.

The Liverpool defender was a little upset he had missed out on the Man of the Match award despite scoring the opener in the Reds' win.

Ryan Gravenberch, Sky Sports:

This season I want to show myself again. I think I'm in the right way so I have to just keep going.

The manager has put me in the starting XI and given me a lot of confidence. I think I've done really well so far.

I said it at half time and I'll say it again. When are we going to stop thinking this form is just a purple patch. Gravenberch's first few weeks of the season have been remarkable. He hasn't had a bad game yet, in fact, he's been Liverpool's best player in at least three or four matches this term.

The 22-year-old, yes, 22-year-old, was named Man of the Match by Gary Neville on Sky Sports. I'll get some data to back up that accolade in a second.

The Wolves midfielder sunk to the ground after the final whistle and could be seen weeping for a couple of minutes. I'm assuming something I'm unaware of has contributed to that.

Liverpool have done it but only just. This game was a microcosm of Wolves' season so far. They were good in large spells but just couldn't do enought to get something from the fixture.

Victory takes Liverpool top of the table with 15 points from the frst six games. They'll play better than this on other days.

...literally! We're into the final minute and the home side are pushing Liverpool back into their own half. The crosses have been poor and there hasn't been enough urgency.

Liverpool had a late break and were bearing down on the Wolves goal with four players. Slot's side couldn't string the passes together. Gakpo had the final touch, which was neither a cross nor shot that went well wide.

Plenty of time for Wolves to get something out of this game.

Liverpool arent taking any risks with the Scotland captain. Joe Gomez comes on to replace him.

The forward has been really good since he's come on but he's been booked after leaving a nasty tackle on the leg of Andy Robertson. We've seen about three of those tackles tonight.

Wolves readying for a final push

There's a strange atmosphere at Molineux right now. Both sets of supporters are wary of the threat the other team can cause in the final minutes.

But Wolves are behind and surely they have to go for it. They'd be well worth it.

Just 10 minutes of regular time to play and Wolves are stil in this one. Gary O'Neil will take heart from his side's ability to grab one equaliser tonight but can his troops do it again?

Liverpool up the tempo again. Jones and Gakpo have made areal impact since they've come on and it's theformer who had an attemptthat was smartly pushed away by Johnstone.

It's end-to-end stuff right now. Salah just wasted a brilliant chance to double when he failed to find Jones with an easy pass. Wolves were stretched, with two Liverpool players running in on Johnstone.

Gakpo and Jones have come on for Diaz and Szoboszlai as Slot looks to ensure his side don't slip up again.

Oh whata chance for Wolves to get another equaliser. The home side broke to superb effect and had substitute Forbs running at Alexander-Arnold.

The forward cut inside but saw Konate bloke his goal-bound attempt.

Gary O'Neil has turned to the bench again and brought on Hwang, who scored against the Reds last season, for Larsen. The South Korean has three goals to his name against Liverpool.

The Frenchman has had a challenging few minutes and finds himself in the book after a late tackle. WOlves have a free-kick in a good position here.

What a mad minute but Liverpool are in front again thanks to Salah's calmly dispatched penalty. The Reds forward sends Johnstone the wrong way.

Slot will be keen for his side to put this one away now.

It's all happening here. Semedo pulls down Jota in the box and Athony Taylor points to the spot. VAR are having a look but I doubt this will be overturned.

What a shambles from Liverpool. Konate's indecision allows Wolves to keep an attack alive, which Ait Nouri duly dispatches. A real mess of a goal for the visitors who took their eye of the ball there.

O'Neil blinks first. Bellegarde comes off for Carlos Forbs.

Wolves have been playing with fire, playing it out from the back and they were almost caught when Lemina passed it straight to Salah. Luckily for the home side, the Reds forward fired it wide on his weaker foot.

A more controlled start from the Reds

It's been a better start to the second period for the visitors than the first, with them controlling position and pushing Wolves back into their own box.

We're back underway at Molineux. Wolves kick things off looking to get something from this game.

Jamie Redknapp, Sky Sports:

Bellegarde hasn't done enough against Trent, who has been booked. He doesn't want to go one-on-one, he keeps playiing it back to his full back.

At what point do we stop thinking this is a purple patch? The Dutchman has been reborn under Slot and is proving to be an integral part to the manager's system.

Wolves have been punished again and Gary O'Neil will be fuming. His side were brilliant at the beginning of the first period and looked set to grab the opener before the Reds came into the game.

Liverpool will be wondering quite how they have gone in ahead at the break. Slot's team have been poor in possession and only really got to grips with the match after the half hour mark.

There's still plenty in this for Wolves if the same iverpool team come back out after the interval.

Liverpool get their noses in front with the simplest of moves. Jota lofts a cross into the middle where Konate and Van Dijk waited. The Frenchman rose above the rest and headed past Johnstone, who should have done better.

Liverpool are pressing for a go-ahead goal here before the break.

... or an incredible save. Sam Johnstone gets seriously lucky as Szoboszlai's volley from two yards out somehow hits his leg and bounces out for a corner kick.

The Hungarian should score but he did make good contact with Robertsome's cross. What a chance for the Reds.

Jota tussled with Lemina and caught the Wolves midifelder on the ankle with his studs. VAR had a long look at the incident, which Anthony Taylor initially didn't deem sufficent for a booking.

After the VAR check Jota is shown a yellow. I didn't think VAR were supposed to intervene for bookings.

The Wolves midfielder, linked heavily with a move to Liverpool last year, lunged into a tackle on Mac Allister and has been shown a yellow card. VAR had a look but it's just a yellow.

Liverpool do have a free-kick in a dangerous position. Let's see if anything will come from it .

Diaz's influence is growing

Liverpool look to have weathered that storm and have again asserted themselves in the fixture. The biggest reason for that is the growing influence of Luis Diaz, who has been in the form of his life this season.

Slot's normally calm manner has been replaced by some action after seeing his side struggle in the first 20 minutes of this game. He's just had a word with Dominik Szoboszlai and is probably pondering changes to the set-up already.

If not for those two, the Reds would be behind by now. Alisson came out smartly to thwart a Wolves attack before Van Dijk heads clear from a dangerous Wolves cross.

The Reds have been well off it!

Slot's' men are under the cosh at the minute.Wolves really need to capitalise on this period of dominance at the start of the game.

The Wolves keeper nearly had a nightmare trying to play out from the back. The former Crystal Palace stopper misplaced a pass earlier and those two incidents have just made everyone in the crowd very nervy.

Wolves continue to furstrate Liverpool. Slot won't be happy with the first few minutes here.

Liverpool looked to have got a foothold in the game in the last minute, winning th eball back high and springing attacks. Salah tried to find Jota in the middle with a cross but the former Wolves man was agonisingly close.

Anthony Taylor off and running, six minutes to his first yellow card of the day. Shown to Alexander-Arnold for kicking the ball away after committing a foul for a free-kick. Great cheers of irony ring around Molineux.

It’s Taylor’s first game back in the middle since his record 16 yellows at Bournemouth-Chelsea and he did look a little sheepish as he went to his pocket…

A really silly yellow card for Trent Alexander-Arnold after he kicked the ball away. This could be a long evening against Bellegarde with a caution.

Wolves' smart start continues and the home side have just registered the first shot of the game. Bellagarde had it and in in truth it was very easy for Alisson in goal.

Wolves are pushing right up and pressing the Reds. Bold strategy.

Positive start for the home side

O'Neil will be pleased by the first minute or so of action here. His side have snapped into tackles and won the ball back from the Reds on a few occasions.

Liverpool with the kick-off. Let's hope it's a fun one.

We're just minutes away from kick-off at Molineux. Can the home side spring a surprise?

Wolves are obviously outsiders for this one but their squad retains considerable quality. Kick-off is less than 10 minutes away!

There were a few of the players that missed a day or so. But we probably arrive today in a better spot than I expected.

Of course, your two starting centre-backs from last week missing is not ideal. It's an opportunity for the boys to stake a claim but one that we're relishing.

We have been heavily punished so we've done some work on what it looks like when it doesn't go your way. There has been some hard luck in there which I don't like to use but hopefully if we can do in little situations then those moments can turn in our favour.

Reds are out onto the pitch getting ready for the fixture this evening. Alisson is sporting a much different look to the one he had before he was injured. The facial hair is no more!

Also, Salah's barnet is really coming in isn't it.

The fixture list has been really hard for [Wolves] and even though those games were hard I think they deserved more points than they got.

There are better than the league table shows at the moment and hopefully for them they'll go up after the game we play against them today.

The former Girona defender partners Toti at the heart of Wolves' back four for the first time tonight after injury and illness put paid to the prefered line-up. Wolves have already conceded 14 goals this season so it'll be a massive game for defenders.

We're only 30 minutes away from kick-off at Wolves. Just before the players come out for their warm-ups, how about a peek inside the away dressing room eh?

Arsenal have snatched it right at the death to break Leicester hearts and spare themselves one hell of a rollocking by their manager. Elsewhere, Dwight McNeil was the hero for Everton, who recovered from a goal down to claim a much-needed win.

The Liverpool camplook in good spirits and for good reason. They come into this game with the chance to go top and they're no doubt hearing about Arsenal's struggles at the Emirates.

The Dutchman has been in red-hot form this season under his compatriot in the role he plays for the national team. Unfortunately for Gakpo, his form has coincided with Luis Diaz's blistering performances.

Arne Slot remarked on how he'll keep all of his attackers happy this season ahead of the Wolves trip.

Arne Slot:

The positive thing with us having so many games is that they will all play a lot of games.They understand they won’t play every game but they have to stay sharp. As long as they accept the situation, and that is what they are dong, it is positive.

They have good numbers and I see them smile a lot. I have to keep them happy in what they doing.

Leicester's equaliser going down well among the Liverpool contingent at Molineux. They will go top if they can beat Wolves. Slot’s team as expected with Alisson back. Darwin is ill. No Dawson for Wolves…

This is a little bit cheeky from the Liverpool media team on two fronts. Jota is looking to continue his fine form from midweek aagainst his former club thsi evening.

The striker signed from Wolves in 2020. The Reds also fired a little dig at their Premier League rivals Arsenal by producing a highlights package of his goals against the Gunners.

We were great before but Arne is bringing to us a new energy and knowledge. He is a really smart manager and he is helping us a lot. You can see from how we are playing now.

We are committed to the plan and can see it is a good plan. We still have a lot to improve but we are in the right direction. We have a big gap to reach for our best but we are doing well so far.

It's turning into a thrilling day of action in the Premier League, with goals flying in all over the place. Most notable, is down at the Emirates, where Arsenal led by two goals to nil at the break but Leciester have brought things back to 2-2.

Alexander-Arnold's looking especially gleeful, maybe he got offered a bumper new contrat on the bus. Wishful thinking, I know.

I was talking about the Wolves bug earlier but it looks like Liverpool have also been struck with a case of the lurgies as Nunez misses on the squad entirely.

Bueno and Toti replace Dawson and Mosquera, who suffered a season-ending injury in their 3-1 loss against Aston Villa, at the back.

As expected Slot reverts back his strongest side after making 10 changes for the midweek League Cup win over West Ham. Liverpool fans will also be happy to see Alisson resturning to the starting line-up.

However, Darwin Nunez misses out on the squad altogther, more on that to come.

Wolves have lost more Premier League games against Liverpool (16) than any other opponent. Meanwhile the Reds hve kept a clean sheet in 65 per cent of the games they've played against the west Midlands outfit.

The game below was one of those encounter, with the Reds running out 3-0 victors in, if memory serves, Kenny Dalglish's first game of his second spell as Reds boss.

The players are in the building ahead of kick-off this evening. None of them are looking particularly chipper.

Every team we face has players who cost £40million-£50m and have quality so there are no easy games.

Wolves have been unlucky already playing Arsenal, Newcastle, Chelsea and Aston Villa. The best way to judge the table is after 19 games.

There is quite a bit of illness at the moment, there are a few who will need a check on how they are feeling. Quite a few missed training today [Friday].

Some of the lads will struggle for tomorrow, whether they don't quite make it or are not fit enough to start. Sometimes it can clear up in 24 hours. We are hopeful that all of the guys who have had something over the last couple of days will be fine. But, as the doctors told me, at this stage it's difficult to give a definitive answer.

When it rains it pours. Wolves are winless from their first five in the league and ahead of the visit of Liverpool, several members of their squad have been hit with a nasty bug that has been going around.

We'll know for sure who the absentees are when the teams are announced in about half an hour.
