Mail Sport's Jack Gaughan provides his player ratings from Newcastle's 1-1 draw with league leaders Manchester City.

There has been a couple of early goals in the 3pm kick-offs.

Brentford opened the scoring through Bryan Mbuemeo inside the opening yet again for the Bees.

Meanwhile, Brighton have taken the lead at Stamford Bridge against Chelsea.

Manchester City Pep Guardiola speaking to TNT Sports:

'We played really well, we had bad decisions in the last minute to make it two, it is always difficutl they defend so well and they defend so deep. We had the chances but Nick Pope made some fantastic saves.

'Josko Gvardiol is really good in small spaces, sometimes he has more problems in the big spaces.

'When we scored the goal is when we played better we made a mistake and they were better but after that we took the game again and we had the chances to win.

'Mateo [Kovacic] and Rico [Lewis] were brilliant as well as Bernardo when he had to play there.

Newcastle United forward Anthony Gordon speaking to TNT Sport:

'I said before the game I thought we would have that reaction you could see we wasn't happy.

'It was hard against City but we felt okay at half-time we always thought we would get moments and we took them.

'I think just the way I play striker you will see a lot of pressing, because I am not a natural number nine that is the way I play.

'I was one on one, I thought I was going to be offside, the closer I got to the keeper he just smothered me.

'On my second touch I see he is really close to me and I didn't want to risk just shooting at him.

'Maybe if I wasn't thinking about VAR I don't try to go around him, maybe I just shoot.

'I think it is a really good place to be given we are nowhere near we can be but that is our standard now.'

Newcastl defender Fabian Schar speaking to TNT Sport:

'We know how tough this game is going to be but we did brilliantly and it was a deserved point for both teams.

'I think they probably one chance in the first half and obviously they scored, but we kept going and after we scored to make it 1-1 and we deserved to equalise.

'Always when you play here when you score the fans are much more into the game and they are behind us and it gives us extra energy and we tried to go again to score the second but we will take the point.

'Alex [Isak] is a big miss for us but Anthony [Gordon] was brilliant was up front, he ran so much and put so much pressure on their defenders, we have a lot of great players but we will be happy when Alex is back as well.

'It just shows what level we can be at, I think the first games of the season weren't our best performances but now we have shown what we are capable of.'

What a breathless second-half that was!

Anthony Gordon levelled the scoring for Newcastle from the penalty spot and that sparked the game into life in the second-half.

Both goalkeepers were forced into big saves at crucial times in the game and both sides have wasted great opportunities to win it.

On the balance of play it was a deserved draw for both sides.

Back-to-back draws for Man City sees them on 14 points extending their lead over Liverpool and Aston Villa to two points.

For Newcastle it is a result that somewhat helps get the bitter taste of that Fulham defeat out of their mouth.

It looks like, so far at least, it is not to be for Erling Haaland.

He is presented with another headed chances from just around six yards out and you're just waiting for the net to bulge.

The header is very tame and Nick Pope is able to gather.

That is straight out of the top drawer from Bernardo Silva but it is matched by Nick Pope.

Silva's technique is unbelievable as he controls the ball, he swivels and hits the ball ferociously on the full, but his goal bound effort is palmed over by Nick Pope.

That would have been a stunning winner from the Manchester City maestro.

We are into seven minutes of added time here. Still plenty of time for one side to find a winner but who will it be?

That is a poor challenge from Ruben Dias but he won't mind.

It looked like Anthony Gordon was about to escape his attentions and the Manchester defender opts to wipe out Gordon.

As clear a yellow as you will see all day.

This is going down to the wire, that is for sure.

Both sides are absolutely trying to win this game with Mateo Kovacic the latest to have an effort.

But his first time volley is high and wide, it was never troubling Nick Pope's goal.

This game will not be going quietly into the afternoon!

Off go Rico Lewis and Jack Grealish and on comes Savinho and Jeremy Doku.

An attacking change from Pep Guardiola as he brings on two real danger men.

Savinho shone against Arsenal last week from the start but can he have a similar impact off the bench today?

Sean Longstaff has a golden opportunity with his first chance.

The ball is cut back to the substitute and he is around 15-yards out, on the angle.

But he drags his effort well wide of Ederson's right post and it's a let off for the visitors.

Newcastle initially aim to make a double change with Joe Willock and Sean Longstaff replacing Harvey Barnes and Sandro Tonali.

They are forced into a third though as Tino Livramento is called on for Kieran Trippier who went down in some discomfort.

You expect Erling Haaland to score those.

Phil Foden releases Jack Grealish down the left side of Newcastle's box.

The England winger fizzes a cross at head height across the ball and it looks like the Norwegian takes his eye off the ball as it hits more than anything and ends up nowhere the goal.

Perhaps a difficult one but he's definitely scored harder.

Phil Foden finds himself a chance not long after coming on.

Erling Haaland does well to poke ball onto the England man, who takes a touch before hitting the ball straight at Nick Pope.

Would expect a player of his quality to do far better there with the whole goal to aim at.

Phil Foden enters the fray to try and restore Manchester City's lead as Ilkay Gundogan is withdrawn.

The pace of the game has picked up considerable in the last 10 minutes or so but that change looks to have just slowed Newcastle's momentum a touch.

Joelinton has completed the set for the Newcastle midfield.

He clips Erling Haaland as he tried to escape the attentions of the Brazilian midfielder.

They will all have to be careful now.

Jack Grealish has been involved in so much today, including a number of clashes with Sandro Tonali.

This time the two clash by the corner flag in Manchester City's half with the two of them receiving yellow cards.

It is all happening now, that Newcastle goal has sprung this game into life and the Magpies tails are up.

The resulting free kick from Kovacic's taklce is worked to Joelinton, and as he brings the ball under control just outside the six-yard box, he is eased off the ball by Kyle Walker.

It is not enough for a penalty despite the claims from the home fans.

Ederon was booked for his part in the penalty incident as he tripped up the onrushing Anthony Gordon.

There is then a second yellow card for Manchester City as Mateo Kovacic catches Sandro Tonali on the ankle with a slide tackle on the half-way line.

No mistake from Anthony Gordon.

He sends Ederson the wrong way as he smashes his effort low into the bottom left-hand corner.

He stepped out today, to a banner with his shirt on the lower stand being carried by the fans.

And he has paid those fans back with the equaliser.

Penalty to Newcastle.

Anthony Gordon is played in behind by Bruno Guimaraes, and he tries to round Ederson.

But the England winger is clipped by the goalkeeper and down he goes.

Gordon dusts himself off to take it...

For those still concerned with Kieran Trippier's fashion choices, he now has two blue boots.

Looks like the two different colour boot trend has ended before it could even restart.

Well they don't have a traditional number nine, so Fabian Schar tries his hand at providing that focal point for his side.

The Newcastle defender makes a run into the box but can only get a flick on Bruno Guimaraes' cross.

Harvey Barnes then goes down in the box under pressure from Kyle Walker as he chases the loose ball in the box but Jarred Gillett is uninterested.

Newcastle are living dangerously when they play out from the back.

Nick Pople plays a risky pask to Bruno Guimaraes who is under a great deal of pressure, fortunately for the Magpies, he is bundled over rather needlessly by Ilkay Gundogan and the pressure is released.

Not the first time Nick Pople has been bailed out by the German today.

Manchester City get us underway for the second-half, will they be able to build on their lead.

It has been a busy first-half from Newcastle who have worked hard to keep Manchester City quiet.

Brazilians Joelinton and Bruno Guimaraes have been at the centre of that work contesting eight and seven duels respectively.

However, Guimaraes has one just two of his seven and has picked up a booking.

Former Chelsea midfielder Joe Cole on TNT Sports:

'Kieran Trippier has gone to dive in, there is a little bit of luck with the ball bobbling through the tackle but it is an excellent pass and brilliant finish'

Watching this back you'd be forgiven for thinking Josko Gvardiol is a striker.

The composure once he gets in the box is brilliant and then he produces the finish to match it.

Maybe an undeserved lead but it is a quality finish in the end.

Manchester City lead at the break. They took the lead perhaps somewhat undeseverdly but following their goal Pep Guardiola's side were in the ascendancy.

Joelinton's late effort forced Ederson into a good stop and Eddie Howe's side will be encouraged despite being a goal down at half-time as they have posed a constant threat on the counter attack.

Joelinton forces a great save out of Ederson. His first touch is brilliant to bring the ball down and his powerful effort from the edge of the box is well saved by Ederson.

Wasteful from Gundogan. Nick Pope lives dangerously and he plays the ball straight to the German. With Pope miles off his line, Gundogan has the option of hitting it early or playing in Erling Haaland, he does neither and in end, his tame effort from 30 yards out is caught by Nick Pope

During Manchester City's celebrations, Erling Haaland went over to the physio with some blood on his sock. There is a hole right by his achilles after a clash with Dan Burn earlier in the half.

That is special from Josko Gvardiol!

Jack Grealish rides the challenge of Kieran Trippier to find the Croatian defender and he does the rest.

Gvardiol chops back onto his left foot and his effort from around eight yards out on the angle slides through the legs of Sandro Tonali and into the far corner.

Bruno Guimaraes is the second Newcastle man to receive a yellow card in the first-half. He was always going to be second best in the challenge with Ilkay Gundogan and his slide tackle earns him a booking.

Wasteful from the visitors.Manchester City have a free kick in a good crossing position, instead they decide to work it short down the right hand side. Ilkay Gundogan then balloons a cross high behind the goal ad releases the pressure.

Great defending by Kieran Trippier!

Dan Burn is knocked over by Dan Burn on the halfway line by Erling Haaland, Manchester City work it quickly to Bernardo Silva out on their right hand side. He slides a ball to the back post and it looks like Haaland will tap it in, but Trippier stays switched on to clear it behind for a corner.

The corner is cleared at the second time of asking by Newcastle.

Fabian Schar is the first man into the book and he can't have too many complaints.

Manchester City look to break through Jack Grealish and Schar trips the England man from behind near the halfway line.

No hesitation from Jarred Gillett in showing the card.

There is real danger from Newcastle's corners.

The latest taken by Lewis hall is flicked on by Erling Haaland before hitting Jack Grealish and fizzing wide for another corner.

That is taken by Kieran Trippier, deep to the back post before Fabian Schar heads it back across goal and the danger is just about cleared.

There is a bit of a lull in play here as Newcastle knock the ball around patiently.

When they do turn it over they are pressing well in midfield to halt Manchester City's progress with either side yet to seriously trouble the opposition goalkeeper.

There’s definitely been a 'response' from Newcastle, as Howe demanded. Passing is more crisp & accurate + intensity in the press has returned. A good start for hosts.

The corner comes to nothing as it is headed up into the air and eventually away by Manchester City.

Interestingly Kieran Tripper has requested new boots but has only put one, so he is currently playing with one red and one blue boot.

Maybe the return of an old Puma trend?

Newcastle are just sitting deep and whenever they win the ball they spring forward and the Magpies look a real threat.

This time they have to recycle the ball on the left-side before Anthony Gordon's pass finds Kierian Trippier.

His shot is deflected behind for a corner....

As we have seen early on from Newcastle, they keep trying to get in behind Gvardiol.

Jacob Murphy is onto the ball but he tries to cross it first time and the pass is poor allowing Gvardiol the opportuinty to slide in and cut the ball out.

It has been a pretty measured start to the game but there is a moment of audacity from Manchester City goalkeeper Ederson.

He is under pressure from Anthony Gordon and against any logic he decides to backheel the ball into space for it to be collected by Kyle Walker.

Ally McCoist jokes that the goalkeepers he played with would have struck gold and Pep Guardiola looked less than impressed on the bench.

Haaland gets into the action for the first time as his run into the box is picked out.

The angle is against him though and his effort from the edge of the box is easily collected by Nick Pope.

Manchester City have their first corner of the game after some neat possession before Manuel Akanji's shot is deflected wide.

Not sure if it is part of the game plan, but twice in the first three minutes Newcastle have looked to get the ball down their right-hand side in behind Josko Gvardiol.

It could be a busy day for the Croatian defender if that continues.

An early warning sign of sorts from the hosts as Jacob Murphy gets in behind Josko Gvardiol. He plays the ball across the box to Harvey Barnes who tries his luck from around 25 yards out but his effort is blocked.

Bruno Guimaraes is quick onto the loose ball but he fouls Rico Lewis and the early pressure is released.

The pleasantries have been exchanged, Hey Jude rang out around the stadium and now it is time to get down to action.

Speaking to Betfair former Newcastle striker Alan Shearer gave his prediction on today's result.

Over the years, we’ve seen some blockbuster games between Newcastle and City at St James' Park, and I’m expecting the same again for a couple of reasons.

Newcastle's cup game has been cancelled so they have a free week in terms of no midweek football. Man City on the other hand will go into the game without Rodri. Having said that, Man City can still hurt you with the players they have.

It'll be a really tough game. City will still be favourites for the title and favourites for this game but it'll be a really good atmosphere and Newcastle will have to feed off that.

When you're as poor as they were against Fulham, you have a right of response and they have to respond in the right way because, prior to last week, without playing well they were getting results, so the match against Fulham was a bit of an eye opener and a reminder to who and what Newcastle are.

So many games last year and the year before, Newcastle's identity was about pressing teams, being aggressive, putting teams under huge pressure with energy and determination and we haven't seen that yet this season so they have to get that back into their game. If they can do that on Saturday then it'll be really tough for Man City. I'm going to go for a draw.

Speaking to TNT Sports, Pep Guardiola said his side were sad to lose Rodri but they have to react as a team to be successful.

'We have to, when you use the word team it means that so we have to do it as a team.

'We are sad we spent a lot of time together, something happened and it is unfortunate so of course we are sad.'

He also spoke about his opposition in Newcastle, calling the match at St Jame's Park a special one.

'They start so strong, they lost the last game against Fulham because they are always tough but I saw the game.

'Here at St James' Park it is a special game and under Eddie they know what they have to do.'

And it would appear that Harvey Barnes will be the key for the Magpies against Manchester City today

Newcastle CEO Darren Eales is set to step down from his role within the club after he was diagnosed with blood cancer.

The 52-year-old will stay with the club until his successor is picked and speaking about stepping down he said:

'Being CEO of Newcastle United is an extraordinary privilege and I am incredibly proud to be part of the club's exciting journey.

'However, it has become apparent to me that now is the right time to make this decision so that I can prioritise my health and my family.

'In the short term, it will be business as usual in terms of running the club's day-today operations, and I will give my full support to a transitionary period that will enable the board to carefully assess and appoint my successor.'

Eddie Howe spoke to TNT Sports ahead of today's match with Manchester City and he spoke about the decision to start Sandro Tonali.

It will be his first start in just over a year and the Italian will have a tough task against Manchester City's midfield, but his boss thinks the former AC Milan man can have a real impact.

'I think sandro has come back from his ban in a good place he has trained really well, when he has played he has done well and impacted the game so after a disappointing performance last week we have changed the team.'

'It was difficult we had a perfectly brilliant player we couldn't use and we needed him but we couldn't use. All we could do was focus on the comeback and make sure he was ready and he can make a real difference for us he is an outstanding player.'

If the last year's league meetings at St James' Park between these two are anything to go by we could be in for a real treat.

Last season saw a five-goal thriller settled by Oscar Bobb's fantastic finish as he rounded Martin Dubravka to tap home, sealing Manchester City's comeback.

It was a match filled with fantastic goals from Bernardo Silva's sumptuous flick, to Anthony Gordon and Alexander Isak's wonderful curling efforts.

Anthony Gordon spoke to TNT Sports ahead of today's match where he spoke about his connection with the fans as well as providing an updated on his contract talks with the club.

'I have a great relationship with the fans here, I think the way I play resonates with them.'

'It doesn't matter where I play, for me it is about handling moments when they come to me. Striker, left wing, it doesn't matter.

'I think we responded really well in training, the game being called off mid-week was good for us as it gave us a chance to react.'

'Yeah it is close I am really excited but we will focus on that when it comes.'

Striker Alexander Isak has appeared as doubt for the clash with the Magpies boss confirming that the Swedish striker has not trained this week.
