Onto round four

Ding, ding, ding...

Oh, wait, wrong sport. Unlike boxing, rounds in football can be months apart and we have to wait until the end of October for the next one in the Carabao Cup.

Well, there is still one more tie to go in this round, with Newcastle and Wimbledon set to face off next week after Tuesday's postponement.

There is lots of football before then, though. This time of year is games galore, there is one practically every day.

So, I'm sure I will see you all very soon. Until then, goodnight.

'Nwaneri is ready for first-team'

Isaan Khan, Mail Sport, at the Emirates:

Ethan Nwaneri can't be far from further minutes now. Surely not. He is ready for the first-team level.

The making of Ethan Nwaneri

I think this article is very relevant tonight, don't you?

A few weeks ago, Mail Sport's Arsenal Youth expert dove deep into the young career of Ethan Nwaneri.

From joining the Gunners in his early days to making his Premier League debut at just 15 years old.

After the performance he just put on against Bolton, I think many of you may be interested in the young gun.

If you are, this is the perfect story for you.

Nwaneri shines on full debut

Ethan Nwaneri, remember the name.

If you didn't know who Arsenal's 17-year-old superstar was before tonight, you certainly do now.

The youngster was handed his first start for the club tonight against Bolton with Mikel Areta looking to give him the platform to shine.

And my word did he take it...

Nwaneri netted twice in a 5-1 win over Bolton and his second strike had Arteta beaming with glee in particular.

He looks like the perfect player for the Spaniard's system, his tenacity and creativity fit it like a glove.

That's certainly not the last we will be seeing of him.

Lopetegui: 'I'm sorry for our fans'

Julen Lopetegui, West Ham boss, speaking to Sky Sports:

We don't deserve this score because we did a lot of good things. We made a very good first half. They scored an offside goal. We suffered the first goal.
After we had 10 players they scored more goals. The last 20 minutes we didn't manage well. The players made a big effort. We were in the match until this moment despite the referee decision and a very clear chance we had. I'm sorry for our fans.

Fourth round draw in full...

Right then, I think it's time we have a lot at the fourth round draw in full.

There are some cracking ties in there and we have to wait just a month to watch them.

Here are the eight ties:

  • Brentford vs Sheffield Wednesday
  • Southampton vs Stoke City
  • Tottenham vs Manchester City
  • Wimbledon/Newcastle vs Chelsea
  • Manchester United vs Leicester
  • Brighton vs Liverpool
  • Preston vs Arsenal
  • Aston Villa vs Crystal Palace

Slot: 'We had control'

Arne Slot, Liverpool boss, speaking to Sky Sports:

If you're facing a team like West Ham, who have a lot of quality, they can press you. Second half they were also threatening on set-pieces.
Since I've been here it's never been easy, although sometimes the result looks different, but probably that's the Premier League. Every team has quality players.
I do feel like in most parts of the game we had control. We had a large part of ball possession, particularly in the first half.
I've never worked with a group of players who don't want to play. Everywhere is the same, players like to play, especially to be part of a winning group.

Spurs favourites over City?

I am loving my questions tonight, aren't I? It's like I am having a little quiz to myself.

I bet many of you said no instantly as soon as you saw that sub-heading, but give me a minute and your minds may change.

Pep Guardiola said that he will not 'waste' energy on the Carabao Cup this year, which was a little bizarre, I'll admit.

That means he won't be fielding his strongest sides in the competition which will give Spurs a lot of hope.

If I was Ange Postecoglou, I'd go hell for leather to win that match. Put out your strongest team.

If they do, I see Tottenham getting the win.

21:27

The standout ties?

I think the answer to this one is obvious.

Tottenham hosting Manchester City has to be the most exciting tie in the fourth round.

These two teams have had some epic clashes over the last few years, especially at the Tottenham Hotspur stadium.

Liverpool travelling to Brighton is another tasty tie.

Aston Villa vs Crystal Palace

Last but not least...

21:23

Preston vs Arsenal

I bet the Preston fans are buzzing with that one, they host Arsenal.

21:23

Brighton vs Liverpool

The holders will be going down to the south coast!

21:22

Man United vs Leicester

A tough trip for the Foxes...

21:22

Wimbledon/Newcastle vs Chelsea

21:22

Tottenham vs Manchester City

What a tie that is!

21:21

Southampton vs Stoke City

21:21

Brentford vs Sheffield Wednesday

21:21

Here we go...

Right then, the draw is ready to go.

Jamie Redknapp is about to do his best Rod Stewart impression...

21:18

What ties would you like to see?

I think there could be some mouth-watering ties coming our way...

There are 13 Premier League sides in this fourth round draw with all the big-hitters still in the competition.

Don't get me wrong, I love it when the smaller teams get further in the competition, It's great seeing them face the big boys.

But I must admit, if we get a Manchester Derby in the fourth round, that would be incredible viewing.

What fixture are you hoping to see?

21:12

When will the ties take place?

This is a question that is frequently asked when these draws come about.

So, I thought I'd be kind to you all and let you know when the fourth round will be taking place.

I mean, it's not really being kind, it's me doing my job!

Anyway, enough rambling. The ties will take place the week commencing 28 October.

I could have started with that, but that would have been no fun.

Jota: 'West Ham made it hard'

Diogo Jota, Liverpool goalscorer, speaking to Sky Sports:

The result said [it was comfortable] but the game was completely different. I think they made it hard for us, it was a good game in general and we're just happy to go through.
It's important when you're down to get that [equaliser] as quick as possible and to score at Anfield, it's always special so happy to help the team.

21:09

Draw at 22:20 BST

Right then, now it's time to focus on the draw.

I believe that it is set to take place at 22:20, but in truth, you just never know with these things, do you?

What we do know is that Liverpool and Arsenal are both in the hat, could they draw each other?

Now that would be a huge game.

21:01

Holders thrash Hammers

It's happened again...

West Ham probably thought tonight could not get much worse than their 5-1 loss in the League Cup at Anfield last season.

Well, it has.

Arne Slot's Liverpool have done exactly what Jurgen Klopp's did last season and fired five past them.

The Reds went behind, but braces from Diogo Jota and Cody Gakpo, as well as a goal off the bench from Mo Salah, made it's a job well done for the Merseyside club.

To make matters worse for the Hammers, Edson Alvarez was sent off at 3-1. So he will be suspended for the weekend.

The round so far...

As always, the Carabao Cup has been hectic this season. I mean, it's what we all love to see, isn't it?

I just want to quickly touch on some of my highlights from the third round over the past couple of weeks.

I have to start with the crazy penalty shootout at Preston last week. That was truly bonkers.

After a 1-1 draw with Fulham at Deepdale, the Championship side edged out the Cottagers 16-15 in the longest penalty shootout in League Cup history.

The two teams took a total of 34 spot kicks. Yes, you read that right.

There was also drama in the West Midlands when Coventry looked set to knock out Tottenham at the CBS Arena.

But two late goals from Djed Spence and Brennan Johnson spared Spurs' blushes. It would have been the shock of the round.

Other than that, it was just a goal-fest up and down the country, and I love it when the ball hits the back of the net with frequency.

I mean, doesn't everybody?

Arsenal through

You can add Arsenal to that list now.

They have beaten League One Bolton with ease and there was one certain youngster who has really made a name for himself.

That player is Ethan Nwaneri...

The 17-year-old netted a brace on his first-ever start from the Gunners, while Declan Rice, Raheem Sterling, and Kai Havertz also found the net.

Bolton did get one through Aaron Collins, but they were outclassed by the Gunners, which was to be expected.

Arsenal go marching on.

Who is in the hat?

So, we already know 13 teams are in the draw this evening, with Liverpool and Arsenal looking likely to join them.

There are no clubs outside of the top two tiers of English football left in the cup, as the competition really hots up.

So, here is who is in the hat, as it stands, and what their numbers are:

1) Aston Villa

2) Brentford

3) Brighton

4) Chelsea

5) Crystal Palace

6) Leicester

7) Manchester City

8) Manchester United

9) Preston

10) Sheffield Wednesday

11) Southampton

12) Stoke City

13) Tottenham

14) Arsenal or Bolton

15) Liverpool or West Ham

16) Wimbledon or Newcastle

3,2,1... Draw!

Are we all feeling like Rod Stewart?

By that, I am referring to the time the Scottish singer went all in when delivering the Scottish Cup draw many years ago.

He loved it, and I feel exactly the same way.

When the clock hit's 10pm, we will know 15 of the 16 teams that will contest the fourth round of the League Cup.

So, you know what that means? We need to draw them against each other, don't we?

If you are keen to know which teams will be facing off, then look know further, we will bring you all the ties drawn.

Before that, though, let's tuck into a bit of build-up, shall we?
