Joao Pedro was Brighton's hero as he scored a 95th-minute winner to hand the Seagulls a dramatic 2-1 win over Manchester United on Saturday afternoon.

Danny Welbeck gave the hosts the lead against his former club in the 32nd minute, scoring his 100th career goal in the process.

He almost doubled Brighton's advantage after the break, only for his close-range header to come back off the crossbar. That miss appeared costly as moments later Amad Diallo latched onto a through ball before firing home via a deflection to bring United level. 

The Red Devils then thought they had completed the turnaround, but Alejandro Garnacho saw his strike ruled out after it hit Joshua Zirkzee on the goal-line while he was in an offside position. Just as the game looked to be heading towards a draw, Joao Pedro popped up deep into stoppage time to nod home the winning goal.

JASON STEELE 7 – No chance with the goal that was deflected past him and dealt easily with anything else that was thrown at him.

JOEL VELTMAN 6.5 – Dealt with Rashford’s threat very well on the whole, but less comfortable up against Garnacho.

LEWIS DUNK 6.5 – Typically solid performance from the Brighton skipper in the first half but less comfortable after the break as United upped their game.

JAN PAUL VAN HECKE 7 – A man mountain at the back and snuffed out the danger on several occasions. Unlucky to get the final touch on Diallo’s equaliser.

JACK HINSHELWOOD 6 – Difficult second half as Diallo grew into the game and will be disappointed that he got turned inside by the Ivorian for the equaliser.

JAMES MILNER 6 – Still going strong at 38 and could easily have scored from two chances at the start of the second half.

BILLY GILMOUR 7.5 – Played despite ongoing speculation linking him with Napoli, and looked as committed as ever. Full of energy.

YANKUBA MINTEH 7 – Good duel with Dalot on the Brighton right. The £30m summer signing from Newcastle looks like a good bit of business.

JOAO PEDRO 8 – Played a key role in Brighton’s opener with his ball from the right, and then came up with the winner deep into added time when he was left unmarked to head in from Adingra’s excellent cross.

KAORU MITOMA 6.5 – One of his quieter days but still got an assist with a great low cross which put it on a plate for Welbeck.

DANNY WELBECK 7 – The former United striker scored against his old club again, sniffing out a goal from close range, and could have had another when he headed against the bar in the second half.

MAN UNITED

ANDRE ONANA 6.5 – Couldn’t do much about either goal. Played out well from the back until he got himself into trouble towards the end and had to make a sliding tackle on Minteh.

NOUSSAIR MAZRAOUI 5.5 – Both Brighton goals came from crosses from his side of the pitch but it would be harsh to apportion too much blame.

HARRY MAGUIRE 5 – Brighton’s opening goal stemmed from Maguire’s failure to deal with Joao Pedro’s initial cross. United were in trouble from that moment on.

LISANDRO MARTINEZ 7 – United missed his defending last season but also his passing range from the back. Both were in evidence here.

DIOGO DALOT 7 – Started on the left again but looked really bright. Great early cross for Amad and very nearly added to his goal here in May with a curling effort. Excellent clearance to stop Milner’s effort crossing the line as well.

CASEMIRO 6 – Great interception tackle on Minteh early on but should have done better with header in front of goal and a shot right at the end.

KOBBIE MAINOO 6.5 – Another assured performance but needs to be careful that doesn’t border on complacency. Caught in possession on several occasions.

AMAD DIALLO 7 – Insisted on playing despite announcing the death of his stepmother on Friday and claimed United’s equaliser on the hour mark after missing his team’s first chance early on.

BRUNO FERNANDES 5.5 – Played the pantomime villain with Brighton’s fans but one of those days when he got a little distracted. Replaced by McTominay towards the end.

MARCUS RASHFORD 5 – One of those rather subdued displays from Rashford. Had the ball in the net in the first half but ruled out for a clear offside. Made way for Garnacho midway through the second period.

MASON MOUNT 5 – Played as a false nine but failed to take his big chance with shot straight at the keeper from 15 yards and was replaced by Zirkzee at half-time.
