Pioneering Program
Clemson University's Department of Bioengineering has experienced unprecedented growth in faculty, personnel, facilities and programs. Clemson has strengthened its commitment to providing a unique learning environment to students and scientists-in-training by integrating state-of-the-art research with education in cardiovascular devices and implantology, orthopedic materials, tissue engineering, hybrid systems, biophotonics, nanoscale biointerfaces, biomolecular simulations, dental biomaterials, mechanobiology and many other emerging technologies.
The Department of Bioengineering has been widely recognized as a pioneer in the field of biomaterials science and engineering. As one of the oldest in the world, it is renowned for its leadership in biomaterials research and education.
Academic Excellence
Clemson's bioengineering program began in 1963 with the inception of a Doctor of Philosophy. A Master of Science was added in 1966, and a Bachelor of Science in 2006. Our Department offers comprehensive undergraduate and graduate programs leading to the B.S., M.S., or Ph.D. degrees; this includes certificate programs and a Master of Engineering degree that is available at the Clemson, Greenville, and Charleston campuses.
Student organizations include the Alpha Eta Mu Beta (AEMB), Clemson Bioengineering Organization (CBO), the Chemical Bioengineering Advisory Council (SAC), as well as specific interest engineering groups.

Lasting Impacts
The Bioengineering Department alumni have been an integral part of the Department's success for over 50 years. Partnering with alumni and friends has given us the ability to address future challenges that impact daily life on a global scale. Additionally, we are able to expand the experiences and skillset that our students graduate with - mentorships, industry exposure, and hands-on research.
Josh Guo (B.S. 2010) said that the education and co-op opportunities at Clemson not only gave him the technical abilities to excel but also helped pave the way for leadership roles after graduation.
“Not only did the expertise gained at Clemson give me the technical abilities to excel in every engineering role from quality to R&D, but the Bioengineering program challenged me in breadth beyond textbooks, enabling me to move into leadership roles at these prestigious organizations. Relishing innovation and challenge are things I learned at Clemson, and the snowball effect cannot be understated with a clear leg-up right from the beginning. All this culminated in a recent move into further innovation and career progression into the booming Digital Health field; without the strong start at Clemson, I do not know if it would have been possible now 10 years later.”
